Introducing Ismail Veli and His Remarkable Journey as a Writer

We are delighted to welcome our long‑time friend and respected writer, Ismail Veli, to Peterborough Wide Horizons. To broaden the range of stories we share, we will be featuring many of Ismail’s fascinating articles originally published on CyprusScene.com.

Ismail has been a valued contributor for many years. During his most active period with CyprusScene, he wrote nearly 150 articles, covering a wide range of subjects. Each piece was supported by extensive research, adding depth and lasting value to his work.

His passion for learning has taken him to many countries, and along the way, he has learned five languages, enabling him to explore history, culture, and people with a unique insight. His love of research continues today, particularly through his work documenting the history and families of his hometown, Lurucina (Akincilar) in Cyprus.

CyprusScene has long been proud to feature the work of Ismail Veli, who has shared compelling articles on Cyprus’s history, its future, and the stories of the Turkish Cypriot community. His dedication to preserving the heritage of Lurucina is especially remarkable.

Ismail arrived in the UK on 25 September 1962, at just six years old. Moving from a rural Cypriot village—where electricity was only just arriving and modern amenities were scarce—to one of the world’s great capital cities was both challenging and exciting. In those days, children learned about the wider world through stories told by elders who had served abroad; today’s instant access to information simply didn’t exist.

Despite building a successful business career in the UK, Ismail has remained a committed advocate for Turkish Cypriot human rights. His lifelong passion for recording the history of Lurucina led him to create an outstanding online archive documenting the village and its families.
