Dogankoy Church – Richard Chamberlain photography exhibition

Doğanköy Church – Photography

The work of Richard Chamberlain

By Margaret Sheard

We recently made the long trip to Famagusta to meet up with Richard Chamberlain and attend the opening of his exhibition of the Richard Chamberlainphotographs he took during his army days in Cyprus in 1954/55.

Richard’s wife was due to come to North Cyprus with him but unfortunately when arriving at the departure airport in the UK she was unwell and it was decided it would be better for her to return home and Richard made the trip on his own.   This of course meant that some of the arrangements which had been made during the proposed month’s stay have had to be cancelled, and following the Famagusta exhibition Richard needed to return home to be with his wife who has been  cared for by friends in his absence.

One of the arrangements which had been made was a talk and exhibition at Doğanköy Church on Monday 22nd September at 7pm.   Unfortunately Richard cannot now be there but

New bookthe exhibition will go ahead and his wonderful photographs will be on display, together with Richard’s books – Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life in 1954/55 and his new book which is entitled Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life in 1954/55 and Sixty Years Later in 2014 which will be available to purchase, also Richard’s new 2015 Calendar – Cyprus : Yesterday and Today.   These have been signed by Richard prior to him leaving the island so people wishing to have one of these mementos of Cyprus heritage will be able to have a signed copy.

300TL DonationRichard was extremely concerned that he felt he would be letting people down but didn’t really have any option so as a gesture to the committee and the church he left with me a generous donation of 300TL which has since been handed over to Paula Shirley and Incilay Fell of the Doğanköy Community Association.

We met up with Paula and Incilay and went to look at the work currently being carried out on the church to make good the structure and the roof where there is a leak into the building.  A mammoth task from what we observed and we could see at first hand the urgent need for funds for all of this work and the future maintenance of this beautiful piece of heritage.  We will report more on this shortly.

If you can go along and see Richard’s exhibition and the other events which have been planned please reserve through Paula Shirley on 0533 830 3256 or by email to

Places are limited due to the size of the church.

For all of the forthcoming talks there is no entrance fee but a donation towards the upkeep of the church would be appreciated.
