PRESIDENT EROĞLU: “WE ARE AGAINST THE TRANSFORMATION OF SO-CALLED REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS INTO A FEDERATION BY EVOLUTION”
President Derviş Eroğlu expressed that the Turkish Cypriot side was against a solution anticipating the transformation of the so-called Republic of Cyprus into a federation by evolution.
Touching upon the Cyprus issue at the Academic Youth Forum which was organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and the Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Association at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Palace, Eroğlu highlighted that transformation of the so-called Republic of Cyprus into a federation was against the existing realities and this could not be acceptable as it could cause the Turkish Cypriots to experience the past unjust treatments again.
Stating that it was time for an agreement in Cyprus, Eroğlu recorded that the Turkish Cypriot side was ready for a new partnership state based on a federal structure and principles of bi-communality, bi-zonality and political equality.
Recording that the new partnership state would comprise two equal founding states and it would have one seat at the United Nations, single international identity and citizenship, Eroğlu expressed that the founding states would be sovereign and have the right to confer citizenship.
Emphasizing that full and effective guarantee of Turkey was indispensable for the Turkish Cypriot people, Eroğlu continued: “An agreement to be reached should be the primary law of the European Union in order not to cause any problem in the future on the issues such as bi-zonality, political equality, economic sustainability, territory and property.”
President Derviş Eroğlu mentioned that in spite of all difficulties, they would try to resume and conclude the negotiations in a reasonable time and reach an agreement after the referenda.
Reiterating that the Turkish Cypriot people were in favour of peace, President Eroglu stressed that the Turkish Cypriot people would like to be integrated with the world with their own State and contribute to peace in the region.
