The friend of Northern Cyprus shares its Daily News of Life and Times around the world
Social gatherings coupled with the work of North Cyprus NGO’s has no finer portrayal than that by The Foreign Residents in the TRNC (TFR) whose group comprises around 400 members from 30 countries who share that special lifestyle that is to be found here in Northern Cyprus.
By Chris Elliott…….
The memory of a great friend and mentor, Nigel Watson has been kept alive in the northcyprusforum.net blog complete with its forum that we created, but it’s now time to make some changes to reach out to a bigger audience.

If you have local community news about entertainment, sport or perhaps you would like to have a readers letter published if we think it will be of interest to our readers, do please send us details through the contact form below and we will contact you to obtain pictures and posters when needed.
Please send us details of your local events so these can be shared with other local readers who may also wish to go along to these events.
These events are published in an article every week on cyprusscene and also northcyprusforum to maximise the outreach of our readers’ contributions.
We also share this event news in northcyprusforum members events calendar which gives location details and events published there by members are then shared back through the next weekly events calender that is shared on cyprusscene and northcyprusforum
NEWS and REVIEWS
Please send us details of your local news with a few pictures and we will try to publish and share this on cyprusscene and northcyprusforum .
Perhaps you may like to write a review of a local event or subject that will be of interest to our other readers and we can work with you to help you develop your contribution into a quality publication.
We have had many people write to us asking for help in finding long lost Cyprus friends and if you click on the picture of Margaret and Sermen you will read a great true life story.
When Sermen asked how can I find a long lost friend, we said write about her and he did and they were reunited.
We have many other cases like this and it’s strange how some readers comment on articles we publish and when asked, many agree for us to help them write their memoirs which then start the friends network growing again as other readers offer help and advice.
We are always interested to hear from our readers about their thoughts and ideas so here is an opportunity to share your thoughts in a friendly manner with other readers.
Let us be plain on this point, anybody submitting a contribution must understand that they cannot request their name and address to be withheld and for those that want anonymity, then cyprusscene is not the place to sound off from behind a hidden identity.
For those wishing to make a complaint we will try to arrange a private introduction to those who can best deal with the complaint. If there is an issue that we feel we have the ability to follow up for the benefit of our local readers, then we reserve the right to do so.

Looking back at this past year we have seen an astronomical reading growth of our website and perhaps due to this, and the way in which we publish in a promotional fashion, this brings even more news and reviews to our door by readers who seek our help and value the way we give it.
That is great news but we are very conscious of the need to keep cyprusscene looking fresh and positive so we gave it a little spring clean with a new newspaper style layout.
This proved to be a very helpful change as the icon links to many TRNC government websites, many of which are in English, are now in a more prominent position. That means those who wish to seek news or information or even contact the government departments can do so by clicking our links.
We also now have room to place many other news article features within the initial readings zone and for example readers can, if they wish, send their news and reviews contributions for publication on cyprusscene and also northcyprusforum – the friendly forum. Click here for more information
May we take this opportunity of thanking all of our news and reviews contributors, both old and new, who have helped us grow cyprusscene from a small blog to a much sought after news and reviews website about Northern Cyprus which has a worldwide readership.
Just over a year ago North Cyprus Forum was rebuilt as a blog due to technical difficulties with the original system software and it has benefited from many fascinating reviews and news articles shared from other websites and these have received great readings.
Naturally the original forum set up by the late Nigel Watson was highly rated as a unique Friendly Forum and the new Forum page offers to members a forum section to meet other members and exchange ideas and views and if they wish, chat and email each other through the forum in private as members and much more.
Membership has been growing over the past months and we have now introduced an event management system so that members can submit local event news which can be seen by non members as well.
We have also been testing a picture slideshow system to show pictures on the home page and this will be changed from time to time to help promote interesting work of various groups.
It is also hoped soon to be able to show on a regular basis a series of interesting and topical videos on our home page.
We are looking forward to many more people joining the forum and also for those readers that wish to contribute interesting news and reviews, they can be sure these will be shared also with our partner websites and social media pages..
Thank you and best wishes for 2017
The end of 2016 brings cyprusscene.com moving forward into its 5th year and what a fascinating journey it has continued to be.
During this time we have seen many writers and contributors bringing their news and review articles to our pages and long may it continue so that we can share with the community, and the worldwide readership through our sharing partners, websites and forum.
We also have our individual projects and Margaret Sheard has worked very hard and has been very successful in building a network of contacts that have provided so many human interest stories of times gone by including articles about Newman’s Farm, PC Yusuf Ziya, The Suffolk Regiment, The Cyprus Rock and so much more.
Ladies always come first and it was with great delight that we were able to welcome Kathy Martin who, following the sad loss of her husband, took up the challenge to write about him and other subjects and now has found happiness and made so many friends by becoming part of our core team of writers.
Of Arts and Culture we were delighted to have the opportunity of sharing some great articles of events from the website of Heidi Trautmann.
Talking of life in Cyprus, Sermen and his brother Eren Erdogan have written some brilliant accounts of their childhood memories in the Governor’s House in Nicosia and other Cyprus articles and we hope many more article will follow.
Ismail Veli has developed his love of writing further to produce some fascinating articles on all sorts of subjects to go with his collection of articles about Cyprus and its people, history and culture.
Ralph Kratzer the Secretary of The Foreign Residents in the TRNC (TFR) continues to develop their website and brings us many accounts of their events plus commenting on topical subjects.
For sport loving people we have regular reports on ladies Cricket from Nigel Holman and about the Gentlemen of Girne cricket team from Danish Afridi.
We should not of course forget football with the great reports from Richard Beale about Esentepe KKSK team matches which also have video highlights provided by Graham Brown and we hope we will see sport reports coming from other contributors during 2017.
For my part I had the pleasure of helping both individuals and a number of organisations develop their own websites or blogs who in turn bring their news and reviews for sharing across our media community.
We are also now working with NGO’s and groups interested in helping to make North Cyprus better and where we can, we are talking with government offices and authorities to share thoughts and ideas, as well as offers of help and to establish the vital information that expatriates seek.
Talking of information, thanks also go to Trevor Hughes for his very informative monthly Trevor’s Tips article and Chemist Rota.
Finally I would like to thank Denise Phillips, Can Gazi and Engin Dervisaga, the Radio and TV presenters who provide us with news of the weekly shows on Bayrak Radio and Television many of which are interviews with so many fascinating people in our community.
Despite many technical difficulties we re-launched North Cyprus Forum.net which has a blog section for news shared from other websites in our group plus we have the all important Friendly Forum where members can share their thoughts and news and reviews and in 2017 we plan to expand this feaurure for all of those folk who wish to apply for membership.
So what of the future for 2017, well we are looking to bring a few more people into our hobbyist team who can help with the processing and sharing of your news and reviews and also develop their own passion for writing and creating entertaining reading.
As many readres are aware a group of like minded individuals have come together with the aim of Making A Difference to the wonderful children at Ziyamet Special Needs School. Our last escapade involved starting the paintwork on the wall around what will become the sensory garden. The giant jigsaw looked a bit empty so Friday 3rd June 2016 saw many of the children, parents, teachers, head teachers and of course us coming together to “give a hand” to brighten up the wall!
Once the children were kitted out in protective clothes they were given the perfect excuse to get their hands messy by placing them in trays of paint, then leaving their mark on the wall! As you can imagine great excitement followed with many having difficulty in choosing blue over green…..or should they go for orange?? Once the adults saw how much fun the children were having they decided to join in and before long colourful high fives were being exchanged for a job well done.
Once the artistic element of the day was over it was off to a local picnic site where the BBQ was already heating. While we were waiting for the food the children (and parents) had some down time to play or relax. We took along bats and balls, musical instruments, footballs and other toys to suit all ages. So much activity was going on in the forest that day and so much fun and laughter! All the children joined in and even some of the mums had a kick about with a football, letting their hair down and laughing at their own antics. All that exercise and fresh air led to some good appetites and we were all ready for our lunch.
Our sincere thanks go to Kemal Çelebi of Çelebi Gardens Hotel, Mehmetçik who kindly provided the food, and everything needed to make the BBQ for around 40 children and adults. With kofte, lamb and chicken kebabs, salad, pide and hellim on offer all food tastes were catered for. Once the savoury course was finished a selection of home made sweet treats were on offer for all to enjoy.
After eating it was time to head back to our vehicles for everyone to make their way back home. The children were worn out but the smiles still stretched from ear to ear – there will be some sweet dreams for these sweet children tonight! What a way to end school for the summer.
Our group of helpers may have gone along today as relative strangers, who speak a strange language but by the end of the activities I think we can safely say we are now all firm friends and that we are all looking forward to our next joint adventure………….
