A cooperation protocol was signed between Girne Municipality and the Cyprus Turkish Veterinary Physicians Association

A cooperation protocol was signed between Girne Municipality and the Cyprus Turkish Veterinary Physicians Association as part of  the ‘Spaying Project for Dogs at the Girne Municipality Animal Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre’. It was announced that a total of 106 animals were spayed under the protocol signed for the first time in 2023, and in general, Girne Municipality spayed approximately 365 animals in one year.

Why is the protocol needed?

The protocol, which refers to the danger to animal health and welfare due to the increasing number of dogs struggling to survive on the streets within the boundaries of Girne Municipality, was signed at the Girne Municipality New Service Building. Vet. Hek. Mustafa ERK, President of the Cyprus Turkish Veterinary Physicians Association, and Murat Şenkul, Mayor of Girne Municipality, signed on behalf of their respective institutions.

The ‘Spaying Project for Dogs at the Girne Municipality Animal Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre,’ aims to ensure that dogs can live in better conditions.

Steps To Be Taken By The Initiative

The actions to be carried out under the agreement include:

  • Primarily, the spaying of stray dogs to prevent their proliferation;
  • Ensuring that spayed animals are sheltered in suitable conditions after a week of postoperative care and checks;
  • Ensuring the registration of each spayed dog by inserting a microchip at the Veterinary Department;
  • Sheltering spayed dogs in suitable conditions at the Girne Municipality Animal Shelter until they are adopted, after receiving individual medical care and checks for one week;
  • Initiating efforts and campaigns for the adoption of spayed dogs;
  • Providing information and news in written, visual, and social media to prevent the abandonment of pets on the streets.

Şenkul: Our Aim Is To Process More Dogs

Starting his words by expressing his satisfaction with the results of the protocol signed for the first time in 2023 with the Cyprus Turkish Veterinary Physicians Association, Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul stated that within a year, 106 stray dogs were spayed under the protocol and also drew attention to the spaying of approximately 365 animals by Girne Municipality and collaborating institutions within a year.

He added that their goal is to reach more lives this year, Şenkul reminded that some of the proceeds from the activities to be held during the year will be collected for the ‘Girne Municipality Animal Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre’, saying, “We are trying to do everything we can for our animal friends.”
