NEU exhibition for 35th anniversary of the death of Dr Fazil Küçük

On 15th January 2019, the Near East University organised a ’Fazıl Küçük and National Struggle’ exhibition at its art centre. The exhibition included 165 art pieces of 92 artists.

The President of TRNC Mustafa Akıncı inaugurated the exhibition.

According to the information provided by the Press release of the University, the opening ceremony of the exhibition at the Atatürk Cultural Centre, Cyprus Art Centre, notable guests included the Commander of Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Major General Yilmaz Yildirim, Security Forces Commander Brigadier General Tevfik Algan, Chairman of the Main Opposition Ersin Tatar, Deputies, Dr. Fazıl Küçük’s son Mehmet Küçük, Near East University Founding Rector. Suat Günsel, Rector of Near East University Dr. Ümit Hassan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Assoc. Dr. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, Vice Rectors, Deans, Faculty members and other guests.

The art works in the exhibition covered various topics related to the struggle of the Turkish Cypriots and Dr. Fazil Küçük. The art works displayed oil and acrylic paintings, ceramic / sculpture works, overlapping techniques, collage, video graphics, digital illustration, digital printing and lino printing techniques.

The exhibition included the display of the hyper realistic silicon sculpture of Dr. Fazil Küçük and his Official Car, Austin Princess, given to him as a gift by Queen Elizabeth II  which received special attention of the visitors.

The hyper realistic silicon statue, which was made with the silicon technique first time used in Cyprus, was made one-to-one with the body dimensions of Dr. Fazıl Küçük, in accordance with his 1960 portrait depicting his body dimensions, 168+69+65 cm in height and body dimensions. On the statue, prosthetic eyes and real hair were used in the sculpture with real hair technique on face and hands.  The statue, which was decorated with a special make-up technique, was dressed in Küçük’s original clothes. In order to increase the durability of the statue, a special silicone which is concordant with the climatic conditions, was used.
