By Chris Elliott…….

Grammy Nominee, Demetra George Mustafaoğlu has just flown back from her home in the US to arrive at her lovely home in Çatalköy and we asked her to tell our readers something of her planned musical extravaganza on 28th April in aid of the Kemal Saraçoĝlu Foundation for Children with Leukemia and Cancer. and this is what she had to say:

“Starting with the original 1954 Broadway staging of the musical version of the James Barrie play, Peter Pan has offered young people from several generations a first brush with musical theatre.

Carolyn Leigh and Moose Charlap wrote most of the songs, with contributions by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and Jule Styne. The score includes “I’m Flying,” “Neverland,” “I Gotta Crow,” “Wendy,” “Ugg-a-Wugg,” “Hook’s Waltz,” “Distant Melody” and more. My favourite Mary Martin created the part on Broadway (and in a TV version); Sandy Duncan flew in the late 1970s Broadway revival; and Cathy Rigby brought her boyish, elfin looks and acrobatic flying skills to several productions since the early 1990s (on tour, on Broadway, in a cable TV presentation). She retired her wires several years back.

When Rigby fell ill for an outdoor symphony concert with San Bernardino symphony, maestro Frank Fetta called and begged me to fill in for her last minute though all the music had been transposed down to accommodate the Olympic gymnast alto Rigby.

I dusted off the music and located some fairy dust, donned a green pantsuit and jumped in with a rehearsal the day of the show to an audience of 6,000 people I fell in love all over again with my favourite fairy tale and never dreamed I’d get to portray Pan again until I was asked by dear friend Didem Çapa head of Yaratıcı Çocuklar Derneği to present a concert for children in Istanbul for families in Broadway style. So after much thought, shopping, planning and gathering of props, finding the right locations, I am thrilled to present A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES first here in Lefkoşa and this is the way of the famed Ateş and Diva cast.

Every memorable musical you ever grew up with and any cartoon teaching a moral will be represented In this concert! Absolutely something for everyone! Pan, Tink, Hook, Liesl, Mary, Maria, Elsa, Annie, Ariel, Eliza, Higgins, Cosette, Nellie, Jasmine, Dorothy, Glynda, and even Carmen! Children attending in costume will be invited to sit down front at the apron of the stage for a close up view as a special added treat.
