Our friend Roland Eyerich invited us to join Alper Cengiz of the Soulist Coffee and Music House in Alsancak to celebrate its first year as a venue for great music. We went along to find a packed house and at around 10pm the music started.
What a brilliant night it was, the Music House was reverberating to the sounds of rock, blues, jazz and more. The musicians were first class and had the audience spellbound. One thing I noticed was the mix of age groups from the older generation to the young, expatriates and locals, all enjoying what they had come to experience – music at its best.
Roland has written a great review of the evening as follows:-
By Roland Eyerich …
20th of January – “The Soulist” – Coffee and Music House in Alsancak – One Year and the 1st Anniversary party – A big success.
A year ago, on January 20th 2017, the Soulist Coffee and Music House opened in the small Village of Alsancak. Alper Cengiz (Lead singer of the group Soulstuff from Istanbul) and his wife Yeliz were very brave and euphoric about the task of running a coffee and music house with live music. Alper was not deterred, even if there were setbacks to continue on this path.
The Soulist is unique in the area. Alper Cengiz has created something special. You feel the soul of the musician at The Soulist. Music is at the centre of the stage. The furnishings and musical background are there for coffee enjoyment, with trumpets as ceiling lighting, musical instruments and memories of musicians on the walls which all add to the atmosphere of the coffee house.
The Hürriyet newspaper from Istanbul has named “The Soulist” as one of the ACT activity places of Northern Cyprus. On the 19th of February 2017 Gülse Birsel from Hürriyet wrote “Best place for live music”.
With much enthusiasm and work, Alper Cengiz has realized his dream and created a special place with good coffee, good atmosphere, and great music for customers. The Soulist, a Coffee House including the “Small Music Hall of Alsancak” was realized. Every Wednesday there is a “Blues Night” with Alper Cengiz & Friends. Every Friday different bands play in the styles: Blues, Rock, Soul, Rock, Rockabilly, Jazz, Reggae and Classic Concerts. The aim is to always provide good quality and varied music.
One year on and The Soulist is a success. Therefore, Alper Cengiz invited musicians from the area and the audience to celebrate the 1st anniversary together. The audience created a great atmosphere right from the beginning. You could feel that this would be a special evening, and then it started … Party Time was announced.
Alper Cengiz & Friends opened the program and filled the audience with energy. This time, with Alper Cengiz & Friends, on stage were: Ed Sezener (Vocal/Guitar – Stingray/Strange Union), Naim Korudag (Vocal/Guitar – The Blue Tears), Alper Cengiz (Vocal/Guitar), Bruno Assa (Bass – Niyal Öztürk Band) and Ardar Baykurt (Drums). That was the initial formation, but it changed during the evening. All the musicians who were there wanted to contribute to the success of the evening. They did that with a lot of dedication.
You could also feel the celebratory mood with the musicians. Everyone presented their classics from his program. Kaan Batural (Vocal/Guitar – The Great Flood), Koray Bali (Drums – The Blue Tears), Hasan Günyüz (Vocal/Guitar). Toon Hansen (Bass) completed the formation. The audience liked it and they celebrated it with the musicians. Also Ersan Korudag, the son of Naim Korudag contributed to the success of this evening with his song by Daft Punk “Get Lucky”.
That was the thanks to the audience for one year “The Soulist”. But it was not over yet … Now the obligatory birthday cake was presented with the wish “Much more than this” and Alper Cengiz brought back on the stage, which is very emotional with his audience and his “Soulist Team” were thanked for all their work.
Not to be missed was “Stand By Me” and “Somebody To Love” by Alper Cengiz, but the highlight of this fantastic evening was the last song Alper had saved for the audience. With the support of the Alper Cengiz & Friends Band, there was the soulful and emotional highlight with the cover of Purple Rain. “Hammer”.
After more than 3 hours of live music and a great party with great guests, it was over.
Come back to this place for good coffee and good live music. Congratulations Alper Cengiz
Where is “The Soulist“:
If you drive along the coastal road west from Girne you arrive in Alsancak, and will see the Coffee and Music House “The Soulist” (Karaoglanoglu Caddesi no 10) opposite Lemar and the Golden Lady.
I have a weekly international music programme in the German language for Blues & Rock music listeners on Bayrak International Radio which is aired on a Sunday at 9pm. Click here to go to this channel or tune in to FM 87.8 and FM105 for live streaming. The show is in German but my intention is to bring, through music, other foreign people to my show.
The real Cyprusscene team were delighted to be there to share in the occasion which is now published on our website and will also be included in our new FREE online Enewspaper. Look out for our Leisure Line.
