President Mustafa Akıncı has said that the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides need to create the conditions to maintain a humanitarian and civil relationship and to live in peace – regardless of whether a solution is reached”

The President was speaking at a ceremony for the 53rd Anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance to remember the resistance martyrs at the Erenköy Martyrdom.

At the ceremony, the citizens who wanted to pass by the Yeşilırmak Border Gate to Erenköy by bus were kept waiting at the border gate.

Akıncı referred to the difficulties experienced by attendees before the ceremony in his speech, saying, “This is not what we want. We do not want it. We need to create the conditions for being able to maintain a humanitarian and civil relationship and to live in peace”

Explaining the basis of the struggle, President Akıncı said, “Cyprus is big enough for both communities, and they can live peacefully if each respects the others’ rights.”

He pointed out that the demands of those who struggled during the Erenköy Resistance 53 years ago were the same as those called for today, stressing that the Turkish Cypriot side was ready to “walk the last mile for a bi-communal, bi-zonal, federal solution to the Cyprus problem.”

Akıncı added, “The TRNC is not recognized, but it is a reality today – no one should ignore these realities”.

Siber issues message to mark anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance

The Speaker of Parliament Sibel Siber has issued a message to mark the 53rd anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance.

Siber said that the Erenköy resistance has a great importance and meaning in the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence.

She said, “It is an epic story in the Turkish Cypriot history. Turkish Cypriot university students left their future dreams and education aside to go to Erenköy with boats under primitive conditions, and joined the struggle for salvation with common feelings and without fear”.

Ertuğruloğlu: “The UN must demonstrate its impartiality in Cyprus

Speaking on a television program, Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu stated that if the United Nations demonstrates its impartiality in Cyprus and accepts that the Turkish Cypriot people are equal with Greek Cypriot side, then there will be an opportunity for a settlement in Cyprus again.

Ertuğruloğlu said, “The UN has to correct its mistake in Cyprus. The UN should reassess and review all its activities in Cyprus”.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side should not be deceived by the Greek Cypriot side and make the same mistakes in this new process as they did during discussions for the Annan Plan.

Emphasising that the will for partnership with the Turkish Cypriot people is not in the mentality of the Greek Cypriot side, Ertuğruloğlu said that the Greek Cypriots are now under pressure. He explained that they are willing to continue negotiations where they left off, because they are afraid that the TRNC is on the path to recognition or will take other options on the table.
