Akıncı: “We will plan the next steps on Sunday evening”

President Mustafa Akıncı stated that he will outline to Anastasiades the steps that he would like to see being taken as confidence-building measures during the social dinner to be held between the two leaders on Sunday 2nd of April and that they would plan the road map for the next stage of talks.

Indicating that planning should be done after the official negotiation process potentially restarts after 7th of April, Akıncı stressed that the UN would have more to do in the following days, diplomacy between the two sides should be increased, and that this is the fastest way to evaluate the process.

President Akıncı also noted that April and May are key months to make a decision.

President Mustafa Akıncı also received the Acting Director General for Defence and Intelligence at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office Jonathan Allen earlier this week. Following the reception, Akıncı made a statement to the press and responded to questions.

Stating that lack of confidence between the two societies is damaging to morale on both sides of the island, Akıncı  therefore called for the decisions agreed during the last two years in relation to confidence-building to be put into practice at the earliest opportunity on the island. Akıncı said that he will convey this request to Anastasiades at the dinner.

President Akıncı emphasized that they should show their communities that differences have been overcome in relation to key areas such as mobile communication, interconnection of electricity and firefighting between the two sides, although these have not yet been implemented, and common steps can be taken in order to develop a peaceful culture on the island.

President Akıncı stated that Acting Director General Allen, represented the British Foreign Secretary at the technical meetings that took place in Mont Pelerine on security and guarantees and added that the visit was handled within this framework.

Akıncı also noted that he conveyed the views of the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the negotiation process and its good intentions to Acting Director General Allen.
