The unveiling of the Cyprus Memorial Rock at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire UK, is drawing closer and 21st August will see a very large gathering of ex-servicemen and families of the British servicemen and Police officers who lost their lives during the Cyprus Emergency in the years 1955-59.
David Littlemore has done a wonderful job of master-minding and seeing this project through from the start when a piece of Cyprus rock was transported from Cyprus to the UK courtesy of the RAF which has arranged for transportation from Cyprus by sea and then by road and, following the stonemason’s work, to its final resting place at the National Memorial Arboretum.
We have now received a further update from David, together with the Order of Service on the 21st August which can be viewed by clicking here
Dear Cyprus Memorial Supporter,
We have now finalised the ‘Order of Service’ for the Unveiling of the Memorial on the 21st August..
Although we are unsure of the final number of people attending, we believe that it is probably in the region of 300 to 400, but as I reported previously, the seating will be very limited due to the size of the area where the Memorial is to be placed. The service will only last about half an hour so most should not find that too challenging, however those who cannot stand and are unable to bring a picnic chair should contact Mr. P. Honey via email – firstname.lastname@example.org
This Memorial, we understand, is the first to combine both those from the military and police who lost their lives in a conflict. The standards will be paraded together as will their names be placed together inside a ‘Time Capsule’ sealed in the Cypriot Rock. They shared the risks and dangers and will on the 21st be shared in our Remembrance.
I look forward to seeing those of you who are able to attend at the National Memorial Arboretum on the 21st.
Thank you for your support. David
We are pleased that we have been able to arrange for representation on behalf of www.cyprusscene.com at the unveiling of the Cyprus Memorial Rock and a review of this momentous occasion will be published in due course.
