Foreign Minister Özdil Nami: “Significance of reaching a settlement has become apparent”
Foreign Minister Özdil Nami expressed that suspension of the negotiations constitutes a shocking development and has led all involved to become concerned. Foreign Minister Nami also mentioned that the significance of finding a settlement to the Cyprus issue has become more apparent, particularly in light of the threats created by the instability in the overall region.
Speaking before the General Assembly of the Parliament, Foreign Minister Nami stated that it is an unacceptable approach for the Greek Cypriot leadership to conduct hydrocarbon exploration activities prior to reaching a settlement on the Island. Foreign Minister Nami added that the Greek Cypriot leadership’s recent commencement of exploration activities in a new parcel is being carried out in disrespect of the mutual rights and interests necessary to reach a comprehensive settlement.
Foreign Minister Özdil Nami underlined that such approaches will not contribute positively to reaching a comprehensive settlement and that the steps being taken are not conducive to peace building activities. Stating that the Greek Cypriot side’s excuse for abandoning the negotiating table is unacceptable, Foreign Minister Nami expressed that the focus should be on finding the path to a comprehensive settlement rather than allowing anger towards Turkey or an issue related to natural resources to be reflected on the negotiating table.
Foreign Minister Nami called on the international community to re-evaluate their position in this regard.
President Eroğlu meets with Assembly Platform
President Eroğlu met with the Assembly Platform which is formed of political parties represented at the Assembly yesterday.
After the meeting President Eroğlu stated that the Turkish Cypriot side is not at a point to tolerate the preconditions set forth by the Greek Cypriot side any more.

Turkish Foreign Ministry reacted to the decision of the Greek Cypriot side not to participate in the talks of the UN negotiation process
The Turkish Foreign Ministry reacted to the decision of the Greek Cypriot side not to participate in the talks of the UN negotiation process which resumed on 11 February 2014.
In the Ministry’s statement it was stressed that the Cyprus problem cannot be settled only through the efforts of the Turkish Cypriot side and guarantor Turkey. It is also said in the statement that, “The attempts of the Greek Cypriot Administration to unilaterally make use of the natural resources of the Island, motivated by the illusion that it is the sole owner of the Island, and its attitude not to respond to the proposals of the Turkish Cypriot side for a fair sharing of the natural resources, shows that it is not ready to the idea of a settlement based on partnership. Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side desire a negotiated, lasting political settlement on the Island and see this as a requisite of the vision of common prosperity, stability and security in the entire Eastern Mediterranean region. For this, it is essential that the Greek Cypriot side now adopts a clear attitude regarding the new partnership to be established on the basis of the inherent constitutive power and political equality of the two peoples who are co-owners of the Island. Blocking the way of the current efforts for a comprehensive settlement carried out under the auspices of the UN Good Offices Mission will indicate that the Greek Cypriot side does not want a new partnership. Motherland and guarantor Turkey will respect the preferences of the two peoples of the Island to be determined through their constitutive will; however, it will never allow Turkish Cypriots to become a minority in a Greek Cypriot “state”.”
