ABSENCE OF DEMOCRACY
Kostakis Andoniu quoted an investigation made by Prime Consulting Co. for the Sigma Channel in his article titled ‘Absence of Democracy’ in the Simerini newspaper which is being published in the Greek Cypriot side.
According to this investigation 65% of the Greek Cypriots believe that Greek Cypriot Television does not inform the people objectively. The columnist wrote that contrary to the programs in the USA and Europe, political leaders were not being criticized by the journalists on the TV programs; instead the Greek television was trying to court the government by camouflaging mistakes of the government. The columnist indicates that in Europe the journalists make harsh criticisms in their interviews with the politicians however in the Greek Cypriot side political leaders were observed as holy creatures that the journalists should not harm. Defending that thus the democracy was not functioning well and the people were not informed properly the newspaper expressed that this situation affects the thoughts of the people negatively. The columnist also stressed that this attitude encourages the Greek Government to follow a damaging policy for the people.
