EROĞLU: “DECISION TAKEN ABOUT BRITISH BASES IS CONTRARY TO 1960 AGREEMENTS”

President Derviş Eroğlu has said that the agreement made between the Greek Cypriot Administration and the British government regarding the Dervis Eroglu - Picture by BRTbases in Cyprus was contrary to the 1960 agreements.

President Eroğlu recorded that such a decision has been taken at the wrong time when the ‘joint statement’ hopes were high and added that there were some other underlying thoughts.

Making a statement during his reception yesterday, President Eroğlu noted that the issue has been discussed with the British High Commissioner; Turkish side’s worries have been shared and talked about the next path to be followed.

Eroğlu pointed out that there were Turkish properties in the mentioned 7 Turkish villages and the UK as a guarantor state should take into account that the Turkish Cypriots in these regions have the right to live and settle.

FREEDOM HOUSE: “NORTH CYPRUS” IS AMONG THE FREE COUNTRIES”

North Cyprus has continued to be among the “disputed territories” in the 2013 Report published by the Freedom House as it was in the previous reports. North Cyprus has been graded wiFreedom House logoth 2 points in terms of both political and civilized rights and freedoms. According to these grades, North Cyprus takes place among the ‘free’ countries. No other evaluation is made concerning North Cyprus except in the table.

The countries are graded according to their level of freedom, and the points 1-2 mean free, 3-4-5 mean half-free, and 6-7 mean not free.

Freedom House which is a non-governmental organization  in Washington D.C defines itself as ‘an independent observer organization which devotes itself to promotion of freedom all over the world.’
