Sunday Lunch at Paston Farm Community Centre (2)

Sunday Lunch at Paston Farm Community Centre

UK SHOUT – Sunday Lunch at Paston Farm Community Centre

By Chris Elliott….

Growing up in the UK, Sunday Lunch was a cherished tradition—a time for family gatherings and comforting meals. But as life changes and living alone becomes the norm, the effort of preparing a full Sunday roast for one loses its appeal. Fortunately, the Paston Farm Community Centre has rekindled that experience for me.

Finding new friends

On Sunday, 8th June, I returned to the centre, which was celebrating **National Best Friend Day** with a special Sunday Lunch. The meal was expertly prepared by Tracy, who runs the **Baa Baa Bistro Café**, alongside dedicated volunteers. Supporting the day’s event were Vicki and Chris, who have been leading the **Peterborough Police Boxing Club** since 2013, helping to turn the community centre into a vibrant hub.

Tracy, the chef extraordinaire

Their efforts have been instrumental in revitalizing the space since February 2025, following the departure of the last trustees from the Great Community Centre, which is owned by **Peterborough City Council**. Looking ahead, there is great anticipation for the arrival of the **Dementia Resource Centre**, which is expected to occupy part of the premises. This partnership between the centre and the boxing club opens up new opportunities for inclusive events, activities, and much-needed community support.

A Feast to Remember

Tables were neatly arranged, each adorned with **quiz sheets**, setting the stage for an afternoon of good food and lively conversation. The menu featured a **mouth-watering roast beef or pork dinner** with Yorkshire pudding, crispy roast potatoes, parsnips, broccoli, and carrots—all covered in thick, rich gravy, just like my mother used to make. To top it off, a selection of delightful puddings provided the perfect sweet finish.

I was warmly welcomed by **Bev, Sylvia, Vanessa, Chrissie, and Wayne**, all of whom live nearby, making this meal not just about food but about friendship. This is exactly what community centres should be – places where strangers become friends, sharing stories over comforting meals.

A Bright Future for Paston Farm

After the meal, I spoke with **Tracy**, thanking her for the wonderful lunch and asking if more Sunday meals were planned. She shared that she hopes to host **special occasion Sunday lunches** in the future and is even considering **Saturday dining** as the centre grows and attracts more visitors.

Sadly, I then had to leave my new found friends and return home to meet someone and missed the sing song which you can see on Tik Tok through the link below.

The Paston Farm Community Centre has the potential to become even more of a vital community hub—but **it needs more volunteers** to help support events and activities. If you’re looking to be part of something meaningful, why not get involved?
