Ramsey Rural Museum
UK SHOUT: Ramsey Rural Museum, Cambridgeshire, UK
By Chris Elliott….
When you move home, you have a lot to discover in your new surroundings, and thank god for Sat Nav, although this is not perfect. When I went to visit a long-unused RAF airfield, I was nearly directed into someone’s driveway, and on a few more tries, I found roads blocked to construction traffic only, so the search for historical buildings was disappearing, it seems.
I then had the good fortune to discover and visit the Ramsey Rural Museum, which is in a country location on the edge of the ancient town of Ramsey in Cambridgeshire of whose history stretches back into the mists of time in the area of the ancient fens.

So, back to the Ramsey Rural Museum, which is in an idyllic location for those wanting a getaway, place to go, and features 17th-century buildings housing a wealth of historical artifacts and information plus Darlow Farm Cottage, which is an all-wood construction building built in the 1930s on Holme Fen and then dissembled and moved to its current location after restoration..
This originally had no electricity, running water, and mains drainage, and it brought back fleeting childhood memories to me of when I lived in a then, all bells and whistles, London Prehab as a child in the 50s.
Ramsey Rural Museum has to be included on your bucket list of places to go to see the wonderful collection they have, and to sit and enjoy a refreshing drink and cake in the courtyard or inside in their charming Café/Reception area and the museum is open April to October on Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 2 pm to 5 pm and admission is free.

For children, there is plenty to keep them occupied, and they have several tents there where they host events, including the Ramsey and District Annual Show on 26th July 2025.
Ramsey Rural Museum, is staffed by volunteers, and perhaps you may like to be one, and as a registered charity, they are always looking for helpers, and it is a treasure trove of history and enjoyment that must be preserved for future generations.
