In cooperation with Gazimağusa/Famagusta Municipality and We Are Paphos Initiative, Cultural Paphos Nights, which were organized for 2 days, were organized in order to keep the Paphos culture alive. As the first event of the organization, the painting exhibition of the students in memory of the Paphos Painter Ali Atakan was opened in the Bandabuliya on Saturday evening 5th November 2024.
The Cultural Paphos Night, which brought our people together with the people of Paphos and the culture of Paphos, was held on Sunday evening, October 6, in Namık Kemal Square. The night was held in a wedding atmosphere, where the group Authentic and the Cyprus Weathers Association took the stage and gave the public hours of fun. In the evening , Ercan Saymen’s short stand-up shows between the programs added colour, when bread kadayif, herse, and hackberry bidda were served.
Famagusta Municipality Folk Dance Ensemble also took part in the nights event.
In his speech, Famagusta Mayor Dr. Süleyman Uluçay stated that Gazimağusa/Famagusta, a historical port city, is a city where many different cultures meet, that Paphos raises people in a wide variety of fields, that Ali Atakan is one of them, and that it is very meaningful to open an exhibition in his name.
Stating that the Turkish Cypriot people have a desire to convey their own culture to their children and youth, but the most important thing is the sense of loyalty and remembrance to the people who took part in the past, and that the exhibition is a very good example of this, Uluçay congratulated Ali Atakan’s students who participated in the exhibition. Stating that he saw his friends from Paphos working like ambassadors to transfer the Paphos culture to our young people, Uluçay said, “It is a pleasure to be with you in the historical place, I would like to thank all my friends and other municipalities who contributed to the event.”
We Are Paphos Initiative Member Yılmaz Öztürk
Yılmaz Öztürk, a member of the We Are Paphos Initiative, said that although the event was organized for the first time, they received the attention they expected, they had a very happy day, and when they came to the management of the Paphos Initiative, they set the goal of organizing an event in Namık Kemal Square in Famagusta, and Mayor Dr. Süleyman Uluçay gave them this opportunity.
Öztürk said that they organized the event in the square in the city where cultures and civilizations meet, and also organized the painting exhibition of Ali Atakan and his students from Paphos in Bandabuliya.
“Paphos is a great longing for us, where we left our childhood, our youth, our memories, our immigrants in Paphos. The most important thing is that we left our martyrs who wanted to make those lands their homeland,” Öztürk said, adding that this should not be forgotten and that they would not let Paphos be forgotten by making such nights. Öztürk thanked Gazimağusa/Famagusta Municipality Mayor Uluçay and his technical administrative staff for providing them with all kinds of opportunities for the organization of the night.
