Girne Municipality Health Branch teams continue to inspect food and hygiene related to the public health of hotels, restaurants, cafes, markets, food production and sales enterprises. The Health Branch teams inspected the conditions of food production areas, personal hygiene of employees, health reports, kitchen, toilet and warehouse areas, general cleaning and hygiene conditions, food storage conditions to ensure that health compliance is controlled.

The Health Branch teams conducted 372 hygiene audits in the first 3 months of 2019. Audited enterprises; 3 businesses were closed due to problems in terms of operation permits, health report and general hygiene.  During the shelf inspections of 9 enterprises, 168 different products, which are not suitable under food and hygiene rules, were confiscated. As a result of the audits, the companies that did not comply with the rules have been fined, resulting in total fines of 11,276TL.

Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü pointed out the importance that every person who lives in Girne, a city of tourism, and who requires a food and beverage service, has access to safe food in healthy and clean environments. Güngördü stated that the market controls of the municipality are based on general hygiene and human health criteria and that there is no compromise.  Güngördü pointed out that when tradesmen do not comply with these rules, there will be criminal sanctions.  Güngördü stated that the production conditions of foods in compliance with the standards are the responsibility of every tradesman and he thanked the companies that follow the rules and continued their business successfully.

Health Supervisor Naile Soyel, who carries out food inspections on behalf of Girne Municipality, emphasized the importance of safe food within the scope of a system besides providing hygienic conditions.  Naile Soyel pointed out that the audit is the responsibility of the Municipality but that the production according to the hygiene rules belongs directly to the operator. Soyel, therefore, said that food security systems should inevitably be adopted
