North Cyprus leg of European and Middle East Rally Championships cancelled

European Rally Championship (ERC) and Middle East Rally Championship (MERC)  special stage in Lefkoşa, has been cancelled by the South Cyprus Automobile Association as the TRNC held its own North Cyprus Rally in Lefkosa at the beginning of June.

The President of the Cyprus Turkish Touring and Automobile Association Tigin Kişmir held a press conference yesterday regarding the cancellation of the Cyprus leg of the European Rally Championship (ERC) and the Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) by the South Cyprus Automobile Association. This event has been taking place since 2014 with the cooperation of Cyprus Automobile Association and Cyprus Turkish Touring and Automobile Association.

Kişmir stated that they could not make any sense of the cancellation of the Rally.

Tigin Kişmir stated that the Cyprus Rally special stage in Lefkoşa, which is notable for being the only common international event to be held between South and North Cyprus, has also proven to be “the most successfully organised bi-communal event”.

Stating that the Cyprus Rally is the only recognized and cross-border event in which Turkish Cypriot athletes participate under an international umbrella, Kişmir indicated that South Cyprus Automobile Association had cancelled the special stage of the Cyprus Rally in Lefkoşa by using the Lefkoşa stage of the North Cyprus Rally held on 1-4 June 2018 as an excuse.

Kişmir said that these excuses are completely insubstantial.
