The headline may have got your attention and yes Northern Cyprus are competing in a Football World Cup. Not the famous one but the CONIFA CUP.

WHAT IS THE CONIFA CUP ? :

It is held every year, it is an international football tournament for States, Minorities, Stateless people and Regions unaffiliated with FIFA.

WHERE IS IT BEING HELD ?

The CONIFA 2018 CUP will be held in London, even though the Host Nation this year is the African State of Barawa, 16 teams have qualified for the tournament.

Four Stadiums will be used in the London area:

Gander Green Lane home of Sutton United.

Hayes Lane home of Bromley FC.

Queen Elizabeth Stadium home of Enfield.

Coles Park – Haringey

With a large Turkish/Cypriot population in the London area the TRNC are sure to be well supported.

WHEN DOES THE TOURNAMENT START ? : May 31 – June 9.

WHAT TEAMS ARE IN THE TRNC GROUP ? TRNC, Tibet, Felvidek (Hungary) and Abkhaia (North West Georgia). The TRNC open their campaign on the 31st May against Abkhaia at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Enfield.

WHAT OTHER TEAMS ARE IN THE COMPETITION ?

Teams from Japan, North America, Armenia, African States, Asia States and even from Oceania.

WHAT DOES CONIFA MEAN ?The Confederation of Independent Football Associations.

WHO ARE THE HOLDERS ? : Last year the tournament was held in the TRNC with the hosts making it to the final only to lose on a penalty shoot out against PADANIA (a region in Italy).

THE TRNC TEAM :

Are mainly Turkish/Cypriots picked on merit from the SUPER LEAGUE. More details of the squad will follow when details are to hand.
