North Cyprus Football : Another defeat but an improvement for Tatlısu

By Richard Beale…………………

It was a familiar story, another defeat in this nightmare of the season for Tatlısu, but they can at least take some positives from this match.

Firstly they scored a goal, only their second of the season, and turned in their best performance of the season.

Sunday March 4 : BTM League Red Group . Tatlısu Rauf Raif Denktas Stadium

There were plenty of cars making their way to Tatlısu but they were not turning off to the Football Stadium, they were carrying on and heading for the Tatlısu Festival. So on a sultry warm Sunday morning the crowd was around 70 evenly split between both sets of supporters.

The match after a quiet opening came to life in the 27th minute when Ceren cracked in a ferocious shot that rebounded back into play off the Tatlısu crossbar. Gazıköy quickly retrieved the ball and a minute later crossed across the Tatlısu goal where the unmarked DOGAN GÖZUTÖK swept the ball home. 0-1

Tatlısu after a shaky opening were beginning to string some passes together and should have equalised on the half hour when Ekrem sent over a low cross from the right, where waiting on the far post was left midfielder Asil only a couple of yards out, but unfortunately the Ex Esentepe player miss hit his shot which was pushed away for a corner by goalkeeper Recep.

The same player again had a great opportunity when again he met a cross on the far post, and his shot had no power in it and the ball was scrambled away by Recep.

This was much better from Tatlısu, and they were unlucky not to go into the break on level terms. HALF TIME SCORE : 0-1

At the beginning of the second half it was quite open with both teams creating some half chances.

Then the goal that Tatlısu have been waiting for came in the 55th minute. An Ekrem corner was cleared only for the ball to be returned by Önder, goalkeeper Recep came out for the ball fumbled it and substitute CEMAL  prodded it home. Gazıköy were appealing for an offside but the goal stood, it was no more than Tatlısu deserved. 1-1

Tatlısu were now playing with some confidence a vital ingredient that has been missing all season.

However they were cruelly exposed when they got caught by a lightning Gazıköy break in the 67th minute. Before that Tatlısu had a chance but Önder took too long when presented with a shooting chance. The ball was immediately transferred up field where Mehmet on the right squared the ball across to ALI SAYALAN with the Tatlısu defence split wide open he scored easily. 1-2

Tatlısu hit back themselves with Talaha forcing goalkeeper Recep to push his shot over the bar for a corner.

Tatlısu should have been awarded a penalty in the 75th minute when Ekrem put Reşat through he appeared to be tackled from behind and was brought down in the box, but despite Tatlısu strong appeals no penalty was awarded.

Gazıköy finally made the game safe in the 85th minute when Tatlısu lost possession just outside their box DOGAN GÖZUTÖK latched onto the ball and sent an unstoppable shot past Serkan.

It was only then that Tatlısu heads began to drop. FULL TIME SCORE : 1-3

SUMMING UP : Tatlısu were unlucky not to come away with a point, they had valid claims for a penalty, but when your luck is out you don’t get the rub of the green. They had no luck all season it must change soon, there are green shoots appearing not just on the trees.

This was a more of a team performance by Tatlısu , but of course there were individuals that stood out, namely Asif and Talha. I thought Tatlısu EKREM ÇAKIRAL was the “Man of the Match”, who produced an energetic performance in midfield prompting and probing. Gazıköy were a useful team having some good individuals with experienced defender AHMET DUYAR being their best player. Calm under pressure always in the right place at the right time.
