President Mustafa Akıncı yesterday received the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who was visiting the island to hold meetings with both sides.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kudret Özersay and the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Cyprus and Chief of Mission, Elizabeth Spehar, were also present at the meeting in the Presidency.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the UN Under-Secretary-General said that his meeting with President Akıncı and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kudret Özersay was very positive. He added that the agenda focused on how the UNFICYP was fulfilling its mandate.

Stating that he had conveyed to President Akıncı the UN’s appreciation for the Turkish Cypriot side’s cooperation, Lacroix stressed the importance of being able to continue to work in close cooperation.

In addition, Lacroix was briefed about the essential work of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) on the island.
