Planting a Tree for Peace in the UN buffer zone

By Chris Elliott…

This week we have seen an unprecedented volume of news and reviews being sent to us for publishing on our website and Enewspaper and on Monday 19th February I was able to be out and about experiencing and recording a great event.

Early in the morning I drove to the Buyuk Han in Lefkosa to meet with members of four North Cyprus Rotary Clubs who had gathered in anticipation for the arrival of Rotary International, President Ian H. S. Riseley and his wife Juliet (Past District Governor).

Prior to his arrival, Rotarians started to arrive from Limassol and other locations in Cyprus and we all awaited President Ian’s arrival and when he did, there was great excitement and everybody sat to take coffee and snacks and meet each other.

Soon it was time for everybody to walk through the old part of Lefkosa past the old Colonial Courthouse and then after a short distance we all arrived at the crossing point at Ledra Palace where we left Northern Cyprus to walk the short distance to a suitable place where we all gathered with President Ian and other Rotary officials and club members for the symbolic Peace Tree Planting in the UN Buffer Zone as part of a unique Peace Building and Fellowship event.

On the 25th February Rotarians throughout  Cyprus, north and south, will be gathering to plant trees for peace at the same time in many locations which can seen on the Google map that has been created.
