TRNC Speaker of the Assembly Sibel Siber continues her meetings at the 10th Plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Istanbul.
Over the course of the Plenary, which began on Tuesday 21 November, Siber attended a number of sessions, including the transition of the APA presidency from Cambodia to Turkey. The Speaker was present at the Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs and the Women Parliamentarians meeting, where representatives gave presentations on the state of female empowerment in their countries.
Speaker Siber was also invited to a dinner hosted by Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Speaker of the Turkish Parliament İsmail Kahraman in honour of the parliamentary delegations from 32 countries around the world. Siber also gave media interviews to Anadolu Agency, TBMM TV, Azerbaijan State Television, Azeri IZ TV and Space TV.
During her participation in the conference, Siber addressed the latest developments on the Cyprus issue and the status of the negotiation process. She called on the international community to remove the unfair isolations imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people. Emphasising the importance of Turkey’s APA presidency for the TRNC’s representation at the APA Plenary, Siber underlined the importance of dialogue for peace today. Speaker Siber also pointed to the injustice of elected Turkish Cypriot representatives being denied access to international forums for dialogue like the APA.
Atun attends OIC Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation in Istanbul
This week, TRNC Minister of Economy and Energy Sunat Atun attended the 33rd Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) meeting in İstanbul. COMCEC represents one of the four Standing Committees of the OIC and typically convenes under the chairmanship of the Turkish President. At the meeting, Minister Atun met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who led the Committee’s opening session, and Turkish Minister for Economy Nihat Zeybekçi.
Representatives from the relevant OIC institutions and international organizations were present, as well as Ministerial delegations from the 57-member countries. Participants, including the TRNC Minister of Economy and Energy, attended high level multilateral meetings organized by Turkey’s Ministry of Development.
President Akıncı addressed the All Party Parliamentary Group for the TRNC at the House of Lords
On Thursday, TRNC President Mustafa Akıncı addressed the All Party Parliamentary Group for the TRNC at the House of Lords. This took place as part of a wider scheduled visit to meet and engage with members of the extensive Turkish Cypriot diaspora in the UK. In his speech to the APPG and other MPs, Akıncı discussed the causes of the failed Cyprus Conference and later took questions from participants.
During his trip, President Akıncı will also meet with representatives of Turkish Cypriot NGOs and civil society groups in the UK, as well as members of the wider Turkish Cypriot community, to discuss developments relating to the TRNC and the Cyprus negotiation process.
