By Chris Elliott……..

We had published  news from St Andrews Church, Kyrenia that they were having a very special guest speaker, Miko Peled, at The Hermitage  on Saturday 21st October and I went along to hear more of the problems when Israel was established and how it affected the Palestinians.

The General’s Son: From Privileged Zionist to Activist for Palestinian Rights

In the video below on “Reality Asserts Itself”, Miko Peled tells Paul Jay that his father, a famous Israeli General, was ostracized for saying it was necessary to negotiate with the PLO and respect Palestinian self-determination; but he never gave up his belief that the expulsion of 1948 and creation of a Jewish state was justified.

Having watched this series of videos I now have a greater understanding of what is happening so close to Cyprus.

Miko Peled

This subject means a lot to me, as a few years ago a friend said to me what do you know about Exodus and after much research which debunks the Hollywood version, I found the story of masses of Jews from different European countries who, after the horrific treatment they had received during World War II, decided they wanted to return to their roots in the Middle East. Click here to read the article.

This country was in fact Palestine and following the 1948 War, independence was declared and the state of Israel was born. At that time in Cyprus some  50,000 Jews held in camps were released by the British authorities and allowed to travel to the new state of Israel.

So what of the reaction of the of the audience at the Hermitage to the presentation by Miko Peled?  It was mixed with some saying it was not a balanced presentation of facts and I wonder how can you present the truth and ask for support if some people will not accept it.

Coming back now to Cyprus, I feel there are many similarities between the Palestinian issue and the Cyprus issue which is well documented  and I understood among the audience were supporters of the “Unite Cyprus Now” group so perhaps they felt the same, or not!
