I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to bring you an interesting report on “Discovering North Cyprus” about the Sarayönü Mosque in Lefkosa.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, during the Lusignan and Venetian period, the site of the mosque was home to a Carmelite church. and following the the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571, the church was converted into a mosque so the Ottoman soldiers camped in nearby Sarayönü Square could use it for worship.
The mosque was destroyed in an earthquake in January 1900 and a British Architect, Fenton Atkinson, drew the plans for the current mosque and its construction was completed around 1903.
