According to an article in the Greek Cypriot newspaper Politis entitled “Inhuman treatment against Turkish citizen aged 60”, KİSA (Equality, Support, and Antiracism Movement), a Greek Cypriot organisation, has condemned an incident of serious mistreatment of a Turkish citizen aged 60 by a Greek Cypriot police officer.

According to a statement issued by KİSA, the 60 -year -old Turkish citizen crossed the border gate from the Ledra Palace check point on his bicycle, without realising that he was liable to be stopped and checked. A police team vehicle then ordered him to return to the checkpoint. Following instructions, the 60-year-old Turkish citizen returned to the checkpoint whereupon a policeman began to beat him without reason or provocation. The complainant lost his balance and fell off his bike, after which the policeman started to kick him.

20th Türksoy Opera days due to open on 11th September

The 20th Türksoy Opera Days, which have been running since 1994 under the auspices of the TRNC Ministry of National Education and Culture, the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Türksoy and the Turkish General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet, is due to open next week.

The programme of concerts held each year in Turkey and the TRNC as part of this gala will begin with a concert in İstanbul on September 11, and close with a concert in the TRNC at the Bellapais Monastery on Wednesday, September 13.

In addition to the TRNC, artists from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey will also participate in the programme, with Soprano Laden İnce representing the TRNC.

The opera performers from these Turkic nations will present pieces from the traditional classical repertoire, as well as pieces from their native countries’ national operas, with a piano accompaniment.

Near East University wins Bronze medal in World Ju-Jitsu Championship

Near East University (NEU) Ju-Jitsu trainer Diogo Moraes Azevedo has won a bronze medal at the World Ju-Jitsu Championship (IBJJF) on behalf of the TRNC at this year’s Brazilian Ju-Jitsu competition.

Diogo Moraes Azevedo, who works at the NEU Fitness Center won his bronze medal this year in the Super Heavyweight category. Azevedo also won two gold medals at last year’s competition in Brazil in 2016.

My Turkish Cypriot and me – a Viennese – had a flat tire in Greek Cyprus on the motorway and a Greek Pölice Car with two officers came and kindly helped us to change the wheel and we were very pleased and let you know that you also can find kind police men treating people from the north properly. Their wish was baklawa which my Turkish Cypriot friend brought to them at his next drive to Greek Nicosia. .
