By Engin Dervişağa…….
In memory of the death in 1273 of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi the founder of the Whirling Dervish order I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to repeat our show “Discovering North Cyprus” about the Mevlana or Whirling Dervishes who perform regularly at the Bedesten, Lefkosa.
This TV show for Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation will be screened with a 7 minute introduction in English followed by Arabic.
The original Whirling Dervishes and their origins date back to the 1200’s and Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi who was born in the province of Balkh, Afghanistan in 1207. He left with his entire family in 1228 and eventually settled in Konya in Anatolia where he developed a profound tolerance for religion.
He was considered to be a philosopher, poet and scientist. He died on 17th December 1273 and was laid to rest beside his father in Konya, which is in present day Turkey.
This show will be transmitted on BRT2 on Monday 11th September at 19.00pm and repeated on Sunday 17th September at 12.20pm
