With distant memories of hard and at times painful training in Karate and then many hours watching boxing and martial arts on the TV, it is with great interest that I met with a rising boxing star in Northern Cyprus a month or so ago so I decided I wanted to find out more of Sugar Atahasan.
Sugar was born in the UK and came Northern Cyprus in 2016 and has been working as an English teacher at the British Culture College in Lefkosa and no doubt has many enthusiastic fans at the college.
It was only a few years ago that Northern Cyprus (TRNC) had another boxing star, David Haye the WBA World Heavyweight Champion, who had his training camp in Girne and sometimes wore the TRNC flag alongside the UK flag on his shorts so we are looking forward to Sugar Atahasan bringing boxing glory back to Northern Cyprus.
With a change of direction in his life, Sugar is now enjoying working with children and he is amazed at how he has been able to communicate with young Turkish speaking children to whom he is teaching English, despite his own limited Turkish.
As for Sugar’s continued interest in boxing, he is an Undefeated IBA Champion and used to box at the Sparta Club in Chingford, North London and on arrival in North Cyprus he was surprised to meet again Mehmet Pasha, a professional boxing coach and promoter who he had met in the UK.
They have now become close friends and Sugar trains with Pasha at Team Pasha Boxing Club and plans to become the first professional boxer to live and train out of Northern Cyprus.
