By Chris Krzentz……..

This article is about my visit to the Buyuk Han in Nicosia with my dear friend Tuncer Bagiskan, the Turkish Cypriot retired archaeologist who explained to me that the Han was built by the Ottomans on the site of a previous market around 1572.

The reason for building the Han was to provide a resting place for travellers in its many rooms and also to raise funds for the restoration of St Sophie Cathedral which was being converted into the Selimiye Mosque.

The Sultan had decreed that if the Buyuk Han was not successful in raising funds for the Selimiye Mosque project it should be demolished and as we can see it is still standing today.
