Just a perfect day!

Saturday 18 March 2017 : K-Pet League 1 White Group : Venue : Aydınköy Sahası.

To quote another line from Lou Reed’s song “Just a perfect day”, “you’re going to reap what you sow”. Esentepe certainly did this by “sowing the seed” with two early goals and “reaping” the harvest at the end with a further late goal.

This was Esentepe’s first visit to the Aydınköy Stadium and indeed Esentepe first away League match against Doğancı. The Stadium is small, with only an uncovered stand on one side, it’s dominated behind one of the goals by an Old Greek Church, which is now being used as a mosque. The small stand was mainly taken by Esentepe supporters and by the jubilant Esentepe young team who beat Doğancı 3-1 earlier to be crowned Champions of League A2- many congratulations to them.

It turned out to be a perfect day for Esentepe as they turned in an almost “perfect” team performance and at the end of the game, news filtered through that their main promotion “play off” rivals, Lapta, had suffered a shock home defeat against Karşıyaka. Ozanköy, after their win against Girne Halk Evi have taken the White Group Championship, again hearty congratulations to them. It is effectively a 3 horse race on who will grab the remaining 2 play out places. Gönyeli, Lapta and Esentepe are the three horses vying for those places and interestingly next week Gönyeli play Lapta. Esentepe are at home to already relegated Serdarlı and their final match is away to Lapta, some nail biting matches in prospect.

Anyway back to the match. Esentepe dominated the game from start to finish, the small pitch and almost perfect surface suited Esentepe’s passing game.

They took the lead in the 10th minute, when Tacettin did well to win a corner. Umar took the corner from the left, where it was met by UĞURCAN who glanced in a header at the near post. 0-1

Uğurcan  2 goal scorer (left)- Uğurcan’s first goal.

Esentepe were two up after 17 minutes, when Uğurcan sent Eser away down the left, he cut inside before sending in a perfect cross where TACETTIN at the near post slotted home. This was the Esentepe’s strikers 9th  goal of the season, but his first in 6 matches. 0-2.

Esentepe goalscorers Uğurcan and Tacettın

Esentepe should have scored again in injury time when a “route one” kick by Esentepe’s goalkeeper Ali was chased down by Tacettin and Eser with only Doğancı keeper Emre in their way, but Tacettin touched the ball first and was given offside, whereas Eser if he had he touched the ball first was not in an offside position. From that free kick Doğancı almost scored, when Esentepe’s Firat and Ali got themselves in a tangle leaving the ball to each other, Çemre nipped in but with an open goal to aim at shot wildly over the bar. HALF TIME : 0-2.

Esentepe controlled most of the second half as Doğancı rarely threatened and when they did they found Esentepe keeper Ali in top form, especially when dealing with crosses that he comfortably dealt with.

Esentepe really in the second half should have had a hatful of goals and were guilty of some wasteful finishing. They had to wait until the 83rd minute and that was worth waiting for as it was a real team goal. Umar put in a long cross to the far post where Tacettin hooked it back into the area where UĞURCAN capped a perfect performance by converting from close range. FULL TIME : 0-3.

SUMMING UP : PERFECT! A real team performance, everybody contributed to the victory.

Others contributed, more notably İlyas who dominated the midfield and had in Hüseyin a more than capable ally who mopped up behind when things broke down. The scorer of two goals UĞURCAN was my “Man Of The Match”. Uğurcan is a wholeheartedly 100% player, and liken to a Duracell toy, he keeps going and going. Put in a new battery and he is away again, every team could do with a player like him. It was good to see Tacettin rediscovering his goal touch, the goal will do him a power of good.

The only cloud to spoil this “perfect day” is that Esentepe will lose the services of defenders Emre and Firat, who were booked and will miss next week’s match at home to Serdarlı. With 5 other players on 3 yellows they are walking a tightrope.

A word for Doğancı, who are a good honest hard working team, they didn’t really turn up at the races on Saturday. They will probably be involved in the relegation “play outs”, they have done well in League 1 this season and it would be a tragedy if they were to be relegated – good luck to them.
