The Creditwest TRNC Ladies Cricket team limped back to the North from South Lefkoşa, like a squad of wounded soldiers.

Captain Hale Silifkeli told us after a gruelling 2nd round of the All Cyprus Ladies competition her side had played their hearts out and some of the best cricket they have ever played, but a string of injuries had taken their toll.

The first game in the triangular tournament had seen the TRNC open against the South’s Limassol. Gina Mapp scoring 3 and Lynn Holman 6 laid a careful foundation against some accurate bowling. The next pair of Hale Silifkeli and Lynda Hurley consolidate the innings with Hurley contributing an impressive 12. The final pair were Steph Routledge 6 and with an aggressive 19 from Maria Mansfield the team ended on 43 runs and in control of the game.

Coach Nigel Holman said when we bowled it was obviously going to be one of those games, we simply couldn’t get a wicket. Our girls were regularly beating the bat, but somehow never hitting the stumps. In pairs cricket it’s all about getting wickets. The pick of the TRNC bowlers were Routledge with only 7 being scored off her 2 overs and Mapp 6 runs. However Limassol steadily accumulated the runs and won by 5.

The second game was against the Sri Lankan Cricket Club, last season’s All Cyprus champions. As expected it was a very tough match, The Sub-continent team was kept down to only 41 runs, which gave the North a real opportunity. However, the Sri Lankan bowlers are their real weapon, their pace always causing problems.

There were many heroes on the North’s side. Earlier, Silifkeli had managed to complete her bowling giving only 4 runs away before being rushed to hospital. Hurley limping achieved and all run 4 on her way to making 8 and Mansfield, smashing the ball around for 14, feeling her painful back with every shot. However, despite brave efforts from all the TRNC girls, they couldn’t quite get home, falling 6 runs short.

In the final game the Sri Lankans beat Limassol, although it was very close.
