The Gods shone on the Creditwest TRNC Ladies cricket team last Sunday, when Lynn Holman’s skyed return catch off the game’s last ball was spilled by Limassol’s captain Puja, allowing Holman and Gina Mapp to scamper home for the winning run in the first round of the Creditwest All Cyprus Cup. The 150 noisy local fans erupted into a bedlam of noise as the victory was secured and the team danced and sang their anthem ‘let’s go round again’.
Despite 14 from Maria Mansfield, chasing Limassol’s 232, all seemed lost when the final pair came to the crease. Needing 15 runs, immediately Mapp was run out after a misunderstanding, fighting back, 15 from her set up the tense finale. Earlier, tight bowling from debutant Steph Routledge went for only 1 run, but several of the other bowlers weren’t so controlled, leading to the Southerner’s competitive score.
It was a three way festival, with an outstanding Sri Lankan team from South Nicosia comfortably winning both their games. The first being against the TRNC who lost the toss and were asked to field. Afterwards, captain Hale Silifkeli said she was pleased with their effort keeping the visitors to only 233 from their 6 overs with again Routledge being the pick of the bowlers. Promising to be a tight finish the hosts failed to respond, achieving a disappointing 219, Lynn Holman 9 and Kelsey Ace 7 top scoring. The sub-continent’s other game they totally dominated with Limassol only scoring a modest 203 to lose by a massive 45 runs.

Coach Nigel Holman confided to us he was disappointed, he felt the TRNC ladies had a real chance of winning both of their games and the league’s 1st round, but their bowling let them down.
He tells us coaching will be as usual at 11am on Saturdays and players new to the game are very welcome, particularly as it’s become popular for fitness and they are hoping to soon have a 2nd team. Tel 0533 824899 for more information.
