Akıncı to attend the World Energy Congress

President Mustafa Akıncı travelled to İstanbul yesterday in order to attend the 23rd World Energy Congress upon the invitation of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Congress will be held in İstanbul between 9-13 October, at the İstanbul Congress Center (ICC) and the Lütfi Kırdar Congress Center (ICEC).

Economy and Energy Minister Sunat Atun will also attend the Congress, where he will meet with Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Berat Albayrak.

Under the theme of “Embracing New Frontiers”, the Congress offers a unique opportunity for participants to better understand energy issues and solutions from a global perspective. The event will bring together more than 10,000 world leaders and experts in the energy sector, with participants coming from the industry, governments, and international organizations, as well as the media, universities and energy industry associations.

Akıncı: “We are not searching for an interim agreement”

President Mustafa Akıncı stated that Turkish Cypriot side is not searching for an interim agreement to the Cyprus problem.

In his statement to the press following the Leaders’ meeting, President Akıncı stressed that both sides had discussed the issue of federal powers. He added that the negotiators would come together on Monday and Wednesday to discuss in more detail the issues taken up during the last three meetings.

President Akıncı said that the negotiations would continue as previously scheduled, with the next meeting to be held on the 13 October.

In response to an interim agreement which has appeared in Greek Cypriot newspapers, President Akıncı said that “there is no desire or intention to sign an interim agreement. The Turkish Cypriot side remains faithful to the 11 February agreement signed between the two sides”.

Akıncı also added that Turkish Cypriot side is aiming for a comprehensive settlement and is faithful to the concept of an overall solution.

Depending on the progress of the Cyprus negotiations, a referendum could be held in mid-2017.

Swedish Ambassador visits the President of Religious Affairs

Sweden’s new Ambassador to Lefkoşa Anna Olsson Vrang has visited the President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Talip Atalay in his office.

During the meeting, both the Ambassador and the President discussed how to establish an environment of mutual trust.

Vrang and Atalay stressed that fundamental human rights, a respect for people’s beliefs, and living together in peace and harmony is crucial for world peace.
