Leaders to discuss “territory, security and guarantee” issues
President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades will discuss the “territory, security and guarantees” issues for the first time today as part of the intensified negotiation process.
Exact details (such as the name of places) will be discussed at a later stage and will not be on the agenda at today’s meeting.
July’s sixth Leaders meeting will take place at the building allocated by the UN for the negotiations in the buffer zone.
The negotiations will resume in the second half of August after a short break. The forthcoming Leaders meeting dates are expected to be announced tomorrow.
Ceremonies on 1st August to celebrate Communal Resistance Day
The 1st August Communal Resistance Day, which marks the 445th anniversary of the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottomans, the 58th anniversary of the Turkish Cypriot Resistance Organization (TMT), and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Security Forces in Cyprus, will be celebrated with various events and activities.
On Monday 1 August, wreaths will be presented to Atatürk monuments in Lefkoşa and in all districts as well as to the Martyrs’ Monuments in Lefkoşa and Cumhuriyet Park.
As part of the celebrations, all martyrdoms in the TRNC will be open to the public between 25 July – 1 August.
Committee to intensify its research to discover new burial sites
The Committee on Missing Persons announced that they will increase their efforts to discover all remaining burial sites.
The Committee has decided to carefully study the archives of international organizations, government bodies and local authorities that were in place and involved in the events of 1963-64 and 1974.
The Committee on Missing Persons has also agreed to form a team of researchers to scan the domestic and international archives objectively.
The Committee hopes that these efforts will provide useful information for identifying new burial sites and will meet the expectations of the families of missing persons.
Özgürgün: “We consider all intelligence carefully”
Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün stated that his government takes all intelligence about the activities of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) in the TRNC very seriously.
In his interview with AA, Prime Minister Özgürgün assessed the measures taken against the FETO in the TRNC, following the coup attempt in Turkey on 15 July, and in the context of the negotiations. The Prime Minister stated that the TRNC included the FETO on its list of terrorist groups on 21 July and that all its activities are illegal.
He added: “I am in constant contact with our police and security forces. I am given all available intelligence that we have. So far, we do not have any concrete information about any activity of the FETO on our national territory.”
The Prime Minister also commented on the state of the negotiation process. He reiterated his hope for a solution and said: “Both sides should accept the principles of the UN parameters. As long as we all agree on the equal status of the two constituent states – the equality of both sides, bi-zonality and guarantees – then we will be very close to a solution in Cyprus.”
Mutual recognition of universities between Turkey and the TRNC approved by Turkish President
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has approved nine law articles covering areas of economic, technology and education cooperation with several countries.
Two of the articles related to the TRNC higher education system:
“Law No 6727; The law between the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus regarding the approval of restoration works of the foundation and cultural properties in the TRNC.”
“Law No 6729; The law regarding the mutual recognition of the universities established in accordance with the law of the Republic of Turkey and the TRNC.”
