North Cyprus Cricket – EMU Warriors win the Creditwest Cricket Spring League

The final of Creditwest Cricket Spring League 2016 held between Gentlemen Of Girne vs Eastern Mediterranean University Warriors.

It was a bright sunny morning on Sunday 29th of May when EMU warrior captain Sohail Khilji won the toss and put The Gentlemen of Girne in to bat first. As usual the Gentlemen’s captain, Danish Afridi together with Mohammad Bilal came to open the batting for the Gentlemen and making a very slow start, it was not very long before they  lost their first wicket in the 5th over for 13 runs, when Mohammad Bilal was bowled for only 3 runs. The Gentlemen’s captain Danish Afridi was looking for one of his batsman to stay with him on the other end, but it seems that he was the only one left to fight a battle for the Gentlemen, when one went down when Jawali Khan got caught out on six and soon after the second down was Mohammad Waqas who got caught out without making any runs.

The Gentlemen were now in a critical situation when they had played 3 out in 9 overs with only 28 runs. Finally Hayam Afridi succeeded to stay with captain Danish Afridi on 4th wicket partnership for 13 runs. He made a score of 21 runs with one 4 and one 6. It was the 12th 0ver when the Gentlemen lost captain Danish Afridi with 13 runs and the total was now 43 runs with the loss of 4 wickets.  Finally the Gentlemen reached a total of 122 runs with 13 runs from Rehmat Khattak, 6 runs from Jawad Ahmed, 9 runs from Shahzad Mailand plus 8 runs from Sohail Khan, including 34 runs of extras in 24.1 overs at the Creditwest Cricket League 2016 final.

It was an easy target for Eastern Mediterranean University to chase, and their openers captain Sohail Khilji and Majid Khan, made an excellent start for the EMU Warriors in just 9 overs when they reached 45 runs, the loss of their first wicket.  The breakthrough for the Gentlemen was made by none other than Shahzad Malik and the victim was Sohail Khilji captain of EMU Warriors with 20 runs. A lucky Khilji  dropped balls 3 times into the Mediterranean sea. Not long after that, Zia Ullah with 11 runs was next to go, being clean bowled by a beautiful off-cutter delivery by Sajjad Kamal (king of swing).

Still the Gentlemen couldn’t stop the EMU Warriors score.  It was Umar who hit three 4s to add another 16 runs in 14 overs and soon after that EMU Warriors lost their 3rd wicket losing Majid Khan L.B.W and then 4th wicket with Shahzaib Khan on 4 runs by a good catch by Janwali Khan. In 15 overs no runs.  In 16 overs the EMU lost their 5th wicket of Umar who was run out by Danish Afridi with an accurate throw from Jawad Ahmed. EMU seemed to be in big trouble with 83 runs in 16 overs, and on the very next ball Shahzad Malik struck the wicket of Ibrahim without any runs. The Warriors were 6 wickets down for 17 overs and 84 runs. It was Mayeed Hussain and Asif who were batting when the Warriors needed 23 runs on 24 balls. It was the final over of Janwali Khan, one of the best attackers and experienced power, when tail ender Sayed Mayed Hussain hit a six on the 3rd and on the 5th and 6th balls both for fours and that was the match winning shots for EMU. 17 runs were taken and it was over.
