10 Men Esentepe Lose To Late Goal

After playing most of the second half with 10 men, brave Esentepe were beaten in the 84th minute, when Yalova grabbed a late winner to extinguish any hopes which Esentepe had of reaching the “play offs”.

Sunday April 17th 2016 : K-Pet League 1 : @ Esentepe Erdal Barut Stadium.
Weather : Sunny and very warm.
Colours : Esentepe : Red/white checked shirts, black shorts, white socks.
Yalova : Dark navy blue shirts with a yellow trim, navy blue shorts and socks.

Esentepe vs Yavola

On a very warm afternoon, the match attracted a large crowd with Yalova being well supported to watch their side try and get 1 point that would bring them automatic promotion. Esentepe had very faint hopes of reaching the “play offs” which depended on the result of this match, and what other teams achieved in their games. A good sprinkling of Ex-Pats were there to support; thank you.

Esentepe Coach Gokan Kim, having been sent off from the touchline last week, was banned for 1 match, and watched the game “behind the bars” of the players entrance. He gave a full League debut to right midfielder Tugay Alevkayali (who works at the local Yapi Market). Unfortunately within a minute of the kick off after going in for a challenge, his match was ended when he suffered a ligament injury and was replaced by Emre Soytürk. Football can be very cruel sometimes, Tugay who turns up for training every week, and has spent most of the Season on the bench, is finally picked, and lasts barely a minute.

Yalova who are 3rd in the table and are a tall and very physical side came close to scoring when Mehmet Kanat headed a free kick taken by Ali over the bar.

Esentepe vs Yavola 2

Esentepe had settled well and were putting together some prominent moves with İlyas particularly in midfield spraying the ball around. Esentepe came close to scoring in the 26th minute, when good work by Eser and Umar down the left, produced a perfect cross from the latter finding the unmarked Eser at the far post. Esentepe’s top scorer was about 5 yards from goal, and got in a firm header that was magnificently plucked out of the air by goalkeeper İrfan.

Esentepe continued to dominate the half with Emek and Burak combining well on the left and there was no doubt about it Esentepe were the better team in the first half. Half Time Score : 0-0.

Eser taking a free kick just outside the box on the left, brought İrfan into action again, this time the goalkeeper dived to his right to grab Eser’s kick.

Yalova’s Coach at half time must have read the riot act to his team, as at last they started to look like a team near the top of the table. In the 53rd minute following a Yalova corner that was cleared out to the edge of the box, Murat tried his luck with a first time volley which struck the outside of Esentepe’s far post and rebounded safely.

The match would turn in the 55th minute when Esentepe’s Nersin Osman was red carded after picking up a second yellow, though to me both offences were innocuous in my opinion. Veteran full back Barış switched to the centre of the defence to partner the equally Esentepe veteran Captain Berkan. With 10 men Esentepe, with only Eser up front, were playing deep as Yalova now took control of the midfield.

Esentepe vs Yavola 1

66 minutes Esentepe’s Mahmut put in a deep cross that forced the Yalova keeper to backpedal and take the ball just below the angle of the crossbar and post and get injured in the process.

Esentepe defenders were doing well to restrict Yalova to long shots which caused Serkan in the Esentepe goal no trouble at all. However he earned his “keep” in the 76th minute when with Esentepe appealing for offside, Mithat weaved between 2 defenders before sending in a low shot that Serkan reacting early managed to block with his body.

In a very rare Esentepe breakaway Mehmet on the right set up Burak to shoot over the Yalova bar.

In the 84th minute Yalova broke away down the right through Ali, the defender sent over a cross which was met at the near post by Yalova Captain and leading goalscorer Mithat who headed past Serkan .

Ali in his celebrations must have said something to the Esentepe’s bench, which caused a reaction amongst them and they confronted Ali, particularly Eser, who had just been replaced, being very incensed. Players, Coaches, substitutes and Police were all involved in a brief scuffle before calm was restored. Eser ended up being booked. I was told at the end of the game that Ali swore at the Esentepe bench. Full Time Score : 0-1.

Tough on Esentepe, the sending off definitely changed the pattern of the match, but they did well to hold a tough Yalova side for most of the match. On a warm afternoon, the players commitment and effort was there for all to see. The defence before and after Nersin’s sending off dealt well with Yalova’s attacks. Ilyas and Mahmut in the first half controlled the midfield before they were overwhelmed in the second period. With 2 matches left and Esentepe safe it’s time for the Coach to experiment and play some more of the youngsters.
