Esentepe Lose Derby Match!

News report from Rich’s Sport………

By Graham Brown and Richard Beale…….

Sunday 25 October 2015 K-Pet League 1 Çatalköy Nihat Bağcier Stadi.

Weather : Overcast/ with thunderstorms.

Düzkaya colours: Blue shirts/red shorts/socks:

Esentepe colours : Red/white check shirts/black shorts/socks.

Struggling Esentepe were unlucky to share the points after taking an early lead, they had a player sent off and were beaten in the rain by a brace of goals from Yağiş (which in Turkish means rain).
Recent rain and with youngsters playing on this pitch earlier meant the surface was very greasy.

Being a Derby match this had extra spice added to it with the Düzkaya Coach Cemal Kir having Coached Esentepe last season, Düzkaya Goalkeeper Ali Karal was signed in the summer after spending 5 seasons with Esentepe. Also on the Düzkaya replacement bench was Hüseyin Ermis who again was a regular in midfield for Esentepe during the last 5 seasons.

Esentepe with Kaan partnering Eser upfront started very impressively and took an early lead in the 11th minute with a superbly taken goal. İlyas in midfield threaded a brilliant defence splitting through ball finding KAAN running into the Düzkaya area, he rounded the onrushing keeper Ali and from an acute angle he slotted the ball home despite a frantic effort from a defender to clear the ball off the line. 0-1.

Esentepe were making a mockery of their lowly position as they continued to look the more impressive team, with Düzkaya struggling to justify their lofty position of 3rd place.

A torrential thunderstorm had made the conditions more treacherous and it was more like “English conditions” rather than the usual dry Cyprus weather.

Düzkaya against the run of play equalised through an error by Esentepe keeper Serkan. A cross from the left should have been comfortably dealt with by the veteran keeper however he hesitated and the ball appeared to come off the back of Düzkaya striker’s Yağiş head and roll over the line. 1-1.

Straight from the kick off Esentepe almost scored a second goal, again Kaan was put through but this time the onrushing Ali managed to block Kaan’s effort with his feet. Esentepe dominated the first half and were unlucky to go into the break all square. H-T : 1-1.

During the interval the rain thankfully had eased off, Esentepe took to the field with a change of shirt, this time sporting their red fading to a light red top.

It was Esentepe’s central defender Salih who was seeing red in the 57th minute, when he hauled down Yağiş just as he was approaching the goal area. The referee had no option but to red card Salih and for the second match running Esentepe had to continue with 10 men. Nersin moved into Salih’s position in the centre of defence and Mahmut who had been playing right midfield slotted into his normal position of right back. Esentepe reverted to 4-4-1 formation.

Striker Eser was replaced in the 61st minute, by the more energetic teenager Mehmet.

Esentepe for long periods were camped inside their own half, as they frantically tried to hold on to a point, it was backs to the wall as Düzkaya poured men forwarded.

Esentepe relying on breakaways, almost took a shock lead in the 78th minute and it took a magnificent save from their former keeper Ali to prevent this happening. Kaan on the right put in a perfect cross finding Ilyas who had timed his run from midfield to perfection, the midfielders close range first time shot was pushed over the bar by Ali diving to his left.

A minute later it was Esentepe’s keeper Serkan, making a fine save as Yağiş was put through, the keeper reacted quickly and blocked the striker’s effort, but much to the dismay of the keeper the ball was returned again, straight to the unmarked Yağiş who had time to turn and fire past Serkan to give Düzkaya the lead. 2-1.

With Esentepe making a number of substitutions in defence this appeared to unsettle the team, and they gradually lost their shape and it took another fine save by Serkan, diving to his right from a shot from Hüseyin Turk to prevent Düzkaya increasing their lead. F-T : 2-1`.

A very good local derby with both teams providing splendid entertainment. Esentepe deserved a point, they came with a good game plan and almost pulled it off. The sending off of Salih obviously was a turning point, and I think Coach Gokan Kim “tinkered” too much with the defence after this, and we lost our shape as players were not too sure of their role to play. Nersin and Berkan in defence were outstanding for Esentepe, İlyas back in midfield looked like his old self, and Kaan in his new striking role proved very effective. Esentepe still without a win this season now have dropped to 3rd from bottom.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Esentepe Coach now missing 2 players suspended (Başak and Salih), his team next week face unbeaten League leaders Girne Halk Evi. who have won 5 out of 5 and are Coached by Ex Esentepe Coach Mehmet Soyluöğlu (Metcha).
