Girne Wins The Creditwest North Cyprus
T20 Cricket FINAL
With great sporting events, freak results happen, like Wimbledon winning the FA Cup or Foinavon at 100/1 the Grand National. Last Sunday, so nearly witnessed another rank outsider, Cyprus Lions, triumphing over the favourites Girne in the Creditwest North Cyprus T20 Cricket final.
Over 100 spectators packed the Çatalköy Stadium to see history made in the first all North Cyprus cricket competition. Cyprus Lions lost the toss and batted first, Luqman 31 and Shabir 22 made quick fire contributions, but the bowlers dominated dismissing them for 134 with Sharzad taking 17-2 and the others wickets being spread amongst the rest of the bowlers.
The Lions roared back with Muzamil dismissing Rehmat Khatiak and Wajid Khan for ducks in the first over and the crowd sensed a major upset. Tad Haigh steadied Girne’s batting with a carefully crafted 11, however it was Bilal Afridi 43 that made the difference. The middle order fought hard all contributing, but wickets fell steadily. By the last over, with 7 needed, it was still anyone’s game. A couple of dot balls and the Lions were about to pounce on the cup, then a mighty blow for 4 from Jan-Walli, followed by a 2 and the pendulum swung with Girne requiring 1 run with 2 balls remaining. Another big 4 and local team Girne were celebrating.
Earlier in the day had seen the leagues 5/6th place play off between Cyprus All Stars and Near East University, which the All Stars won comfortably by 105 runs.
The next treat for cricket lovers will be the Creditwest ALL CYPRUS FESTIVAL on 7th June. 4 teams from South Cyprus are taking on the North’s best 5 sides in a quick fire, all action 5 overs/innings tournament. The venue will be confirmed very soon.
