Cricket T20 League – The

pressure is growing!

Classic cup semi-finals drama, with under-dogs knocking out the favourites, controversy and emotion, last Sunday’s Creditwest North Cyprus Cricket T20 League had it all.

The morning game saw unbeaten Lefkosa team Taşkınköy take on rank outsiders Cyprus Lions from Girne. Losing the toss the unfancied side were put into bat. Useful knocks from Skinder 19 and a big hitting Sharzad 36 took them to 129 in their 20 overs. The outstanding bowler was Ahmad with 4 for 23.

Taşkınköy’s fast scoring Nasar 20 and Waqar 26 soon put them in a strong position, but the Lions roared back taking 5 wickets for 9 and the runs dried up leaving the Capital’s previously all-conquering side 14 short and out of the tournament. Still disbelieving their achievement the outsiders shrieked and danced with joy, Captain Shakir couldn’t speak, he could only smile.

After lunch it was the turn of Girne against the Eastern Mediterranean University side known as the Famagusta Warriors. The strong students’ side were put into bat, with Zia Ullah 45 and Saud Azam 20 leading the way to 121 after 20 overs. It never seemed enough, but after 2 early wickets, Girne were crawling along, with the scoreboard showing only 8 runs from 3 overs and the spectators started contemplating another shock result. A massive 25 runs in only 8 shots from Wajid Khan and a more composed 36 by Bilal Afridi settled things for the bookies favourites. Wickets steadily fell, but Girne always looked in control, passing their target with an over to spare.

TRNC Cricket Association’s Communications Manager Ian Fell told us, the cricketing battles of the last 2 months come to a head in two weeks with a local derby final between Cyprus Lions and Girne. Sometimes they train together, but on the day, there will be no love lost. For many players cricket is everything, so it’s guaranteed there will be tears as well as great joy. The match is being held at 1.30pm on 10th May at a location to be confirmed on the Facebook and website. Beforehand there will be the League’s 5/6th playoff starting at 10am.
