Liman is so busy!

The Rotary Club of Kyrenia Liman welcomed Rotary District Governor Khalil Alsharif to Girne on Tuesday November 4th.

District Governor Khalil visited beneficiaries of Rotarian fundraising and community efforts in both Lefkosa and Kyrenia, before receiving reports from both Rotaract and Rotary Clubs.

Rotaractors are young Rotarians (18 – 35 years) who take an active role in their community by organising events such as beach cleaning days, and health awareness seminars.  This month Rotaractors are also taking part in the international rotaryinitiative “Mo-vember”, to raise awareness of, and funds for, testicular and prostate cancer, and Rotaract representatives Sevim Kofali, Meryem Baltaci, and Havva Ibrahimer were praised by the District Governor for their energy and enthusiasm.

Rotary President, Malcolm Mitcheson led his committee in outlining the achievements of a very busy year to date, including major fund-raising projects to aid the Girne State Hospital.  DG Khalil said, “It is a pleasure to meet a club so organised and focused – this is what Rotary is all about.’

Rotarians from Kyrenia had already met the District Governor at the weekend at the Cyprus Rotary Conference in Troodos.  19 Clubs sent over 100 Representatives to meet up for a weekend of friendship and awareness.  Rotary is one of the few organisations in Cyprus to truly cross the border, and Rotarians from both sides frequently visit each others clubs.

The Gala Dinner at the Grand Pasha Hotel welcomed over 100 guests, and saw four Kyrenia Liman Rotarians presented with “Paul Harris Fellowship” Awards, named after the founder of Rotary in 1905.  Gural Tanova, Malcolm Mitcheson, Ibrahim Yapicioglu, and Yazgan Musannif were all presented with certificates and commemorative medals.

Rotary is experiencing resurgence in North Cyprus with a growth in membership and activity levels, and have just received the outstanding news that Rotarian Dincer Cagin from the Sarayonu Club in Lefkosa has been appointed the Deputy District Governor for the whole of Cyprus for the year starting July 2015.  This is a great achievement for a North Cypriot, to be appointed leader of all 16 clubs in South Cyprus as well as the 3 clubs in the North.

The Rotary Club of Kyrenia Liman meets at the Dome Hotel on Wednesdays at 7 pm, and visiting Rotarians are always welcome.
