President Eroğlu: “Substantial issues will be discussed on 6th May”
President Derviş Eroğlu said that substantial issues will be discussed during the negotiations which will start on 6th May but the issue of territory, especially chapters of map and figures will be brought to the negotiation table after reaching a settlement on the other issues.
President Eroğlu stated that he may be obliged to review bridge building proposals which were put forth during meeting with former Greek Cypriot leader Demetrius Christofias if the Greek Cypriot side demands to start from the beginning stage again. During one of his receptions yesterday, President Eroğlu said “I think that Anastasiades should accept convergences approved by former Greek Cypriot leader Demetrius Christofias before and if he has a new proposal, he should put it foward”.
Moreover, adding that the first step of negotiations which is the ‘screening’ process has been completed and substantial issues will start to be discussed, Eroğlu said that ‘Governance and Power Sharing’ issue is one of the issues which is considered to be discussed first.
Mentioning the other issues regarding internal security, EU, economy and property, President Eroğlu said that the issue of territory will be discussed at the negotiation table after reaching an agreement on the other chapters as the Turkish Cypriot side stated before and as it is in the UN records. ‘We put forth our territory criteria during the Geneva meeting. The issue of Map and Figures will be discussed at the end.’ Eroğlu added.
Foreign Minister Nami participates in round table meeting at BİLGESAM
During his one day official visit to İstanbul, the Minister of Foreign Affairs – Özdil Nami participated in a round table meeting at ‘Wise Men Center for Strategic Studies(BILGESAM)’ and gave information about the Cyprus problem and the current stage reached in the Cyprus negotiations.
In his speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nami stressed that the Cyprus problem has been on the agenda of the United Nations for 50 years and 10 years have passed after the referendum held for the Annan plan. In the current stage, there is an opportunity for a solution in Cyprus and it is considered to be the last chance to reach a settlement.
Moreover, stressing that the Annan plan process was a turning point in terms of all actors and parties intervened in the Cyprus problem, FM Nami said that our hopes to reach a comprehensive solution in Cyprus became concrete during the Annan plan process. The Cyprus problem and unfair isolations would be ended and we would unite with the world.
Nami pointed out that Turkish Cypriot side who voted 65% ‘yes’ for the Annan plan was appreciated by the international community, formed a base to make important expansions but lifting of isolations imposed on the Turkish Cypriots, which is very important to unite with the world, has not been realized yet.
Adding that the issues of regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean and providing energy safety will be critical issues of the following process, Nami said that there is no doubt that increasing interest of the international arena and the US towards the Cyprus problem is due to the energy potential. FM Nami stressed that the current opportunity should be evaluated in the most effective way towards reaching a settlement in Cyprus. In this context, current dynamics and the issues which affect the Cyprus problem directly or indirectly should be discussed to open ways in order to reach a comprehensive solution in Cyprus.
Within the framework of his contacts, FM Nami visited İstanbul Consulate General of TRNC and had lunch with all personnel. Nami also visited the Chief Editor of CNN Türk Ferhat Boratav at CNN Türk Center and gave information to Begüm Dönmez during a program about the Cyprus negotiation process. Nami also attended a NTV live program and gave information about the negotiation process.
Kuwaiti artists donated their work to Ministry of Foreign Affairs
A delegation of Kuwaiti Art Association comprised of 12 persons who have been in the TRNC since 24th of April as the guests of Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed over their work to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday.
In his speech at the ceremony Undersecretary of the Ministry – Erhan Erçin said that they are pleased to host such a workshop in the TRNC and added that they appreciated the production of such work in a short period of time. Erçin thanked the artists for the donation and cooperation and expressed that Turkish Cypriots have been living under embargoes and isolations and even the art and culture activities and organizations are under restrictions. Erçin said: “You help us in overcoming such restrictions” and wish that their cooperation will continue.
In his speech the President of Kuwaiti Art Association – Abdul Rasoul Salman thanked the artists who participated in the workshop and said that they also received information about the TRNC during this period. Salman wished to meet again either in the TRNC or in Kuwait.
Özersay: “Everyone making a statement about the negotiations should behave responsibly”
Explaining that the Turkish Cypriot side has demanded more frequent meetings however this has not been accepted by the Greek side. Özersay added that on the other hand they made bridging proposals as the Turkish side and even there are proposals including give and take. Özersay said: “However these will not change our determination towards reaching a solution in the negotiations. Therefore pessimistic statements should not be made related to the process.”
In his statement Özersay said that they will start substantial negotiations after 6May and the sides will make proposals, counter proposals and bridging proposals to each other and added that this is a very critical phase.
