UN Padre’s Buffer Zone Walk
By Margaret Sheard
I met Padre Andy Oliver last November when he joined the tour in the Buffer Zone which I had arranged with Sgt Mark White of the UN for some British ex-servicemen and a UK Turkish Cypriot friend. The Padre met us at Wayne’s Keep and after helping to locate some of the graves our friends wanted to visit he conducted a short Remembrance Service at the Memorial which we all found very moving and emotional.
Hearing about Padre Oliver’s forthcoming walk with other soldiers along the Buffer Zone, I took the opportunity of contacting him to find out more and following an article already published by Chris – click here via an article by Can Gazi of BRT2 – click here – on our website, we would like to try and assist the Padre and his colleagues in raising as much as possible for the 2 charities they have chosen to support which will be split 50/50 between – SOS Children’s Villages in the North and Caritas Cyprus in the South.
For anyone that would like to make a donation to help Padre Oliver and his colleagues with their walk for these charities the link is http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AndrewOliver52
The Walk is from 1st to 4th February, from west to east and the participants will be camping out each night and not returning to base until they have completed their feat. Let’s hope the weather will be kind to them as this is sure to be a tough ordeal at this time of the year, plus who knows what other dangers may be lurking in this sad empty territory.
