President Eroğlu continued: “The hydrocarbon reserves existing around the Cyprus Island, instead of playing a catalytic role in solving the problem, caused the Cyprus problem to become more complicated because of the Greek Cypriots’ wrong attitudes.
Five years ago, there was no such matter in the Cyprus issue. However, the way of sharing this resource has become an issue of discussion today. This discussion is going to be more complicated due to the intervention of an increasing number of countries”.
Stating that the strategic importance of the island was increasing day by day, Eroğlu added that the strategic importance further escalated the problems. Eroğlu continued: “The important actors of the world politics are not contributing to change the status quo, which causes unjust treatment of the Turkish Cypriots and blocks Turkey’s future in the international arena. In other words, since they cannot predict the possible results, they cannot display the necessary courage to change the status quo.”
