DOWNER: “IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO BE A SLAVE TO TIME”
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer has said that both sides conveyed to him that they desire to see the progress of the issues. Therefore, Downer announced that he will have contact in September at the UN.
Greek Cypriot radio announced, after the meeting of Downer and the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiadis, that the UN is making preparations for the negotiations to resume in October.
Stating that right now preparations are being made for an accurate preliminary preparation to resume the negotiations, Alexander Downer continued “It is important not to be a slave to time”.
DOWNER: ‘BOTH TURKISH AND GREEK SIDES WANT THE NEGOTIATIONS TO START IN OCTOBER’
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, has said that both Turkish and Greek sides want the negotiations to start in October.
Downer has expressed that both sides are in favour of this direction and the launching of the negotiations in October and they are expectant about this.
According to the statement released by the UNFICYP, Downer has made explanations and replied to the questions of the press.
Having reminded that the meeting with Anastasiadis lasted more than one hour yesterday morning and there was also a meeting with President Derviş Eroğlu the day before yesterday; Downer said that the meetings were in connection with the start of the negotiations in October.
Having replied to a question about the reconciliation document, Downer stated that a document prepared about the issue under his leadership had been delivered to both sides. Downer called the document ‘an historical document’ which includes differences of opinion raised at the meetings of Christofias, Talat and Eroğlu.
The UN Diplomat remarked on the importance of the document in terms of including the issues that reconciled up until today.
Alexander Downer, who will be on the Island until 6th of August, is going to prioritize the procedure to be followed, meet with the Presidents Derviş Eroğlu and Nikos Anastasiadis respectively and also will be in contact with Ertuğ and Mavroyannis.
Alexander Downer will be giving information about the developments and further steps on the Cyprus issue to the EU Ambassadors next Friday.
1ST OF AUGUST COMMUNAL RESISTANCE DAY WILL BE CELEBRATED
1st of August Communal Resistance Day will be celebrated with various ceremonies and events on Thursday.
1st of August also marks the 37th anniversary of the establishment of the Security Forces Commandership (GKK), the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) and the 442ndanniversary of the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottomans. All events and ceremonies to be organized shall be open to the public as it has been every year.
UN SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDED DUTY OF UNFICYP IN CYPRUS
The UN Security Council has announced that the term of duty of the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus has been extended until 31st January 2014 with a decision adopted yesterday.
