BEST UNIVERSITY AWARD TO NEU
Dr. Suat Günsel, the Founding Rector of Near East University, received the 2013 Socrates Award given to him by Oxford Europe Business Assembly (EBA) at the award ceremony of 11th Swiss Summit of Leaders held in Montreux, Switzerland, for his sustainable contributions to education sector at national and international level.
Persons such as Abdullah Gül, Turkish statesman and current President of Turkey and Viktor Chernomyrdin, the Prime Minister of Russia that proved international achievements and success in their fields are amongst those that have been awarded with International Socrates Award for their contributions to humanity in their fields in the previous years.
CIU DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING ACCREDITED BY MÜDEK
The Department of Civil Engineering of the Cyprus International University (CIU) is accredited by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK) which has international validity.
It has been stated in the statement made by the Chief of the Department of Civil Engineering of Cyprus International University (CIU), Ass. Prof. Dr. Mehmedali Egemen, that a total of 350 students are currently studying in the Department which was established in 1997.
Adding that 226 students have graduated up to today, Egemen stated that the graduates of the Department of Civil Engineering will be in the international platform with the accreditation by MÜDEK. Ass. Prof. Dr. Egemen pointed out that the lectures are being
given in fully-equipped laboratories and students have the opportunities to receive applied education.
“CHRISOSTOMOS HINDERS APOSTOLOS ANDREAS ISSUE”
According to the news in the Greek Cypriot press, it was commented that Archbishop of the Greek Cypriot Church, Chrisostomos, is continuing to ‘put an obstacle’ to the issue of restoring the Apostolos Andreas in the Karpaz peninsula and this obstacle was highlighted before an important meeting regarding the issue.
According to the news in the Greek Cypriot daily ‘Politis’, ‘diplomatic parties’ who are following this issue said that the statement of Archbishop Chrisostomos delays the issue of restoration and they pointed out that this is not the first time that Chrisostomos has tried to ‘put an obstacle’ to the issue of Apostolos Andreas.
Publishing that it is expected that the so called ‘Karpaz Archbishop’ Chrisostomos will meet the UNDP authorities tomorrow or the following day in order to discuss and solve the technocratic issues ‘Politis’ wrote that the aim of this meeting is to sort out the latest uncertainty with regard to the UNDP to be able to issue a tender to restore Apostolos Andreas Monastery.
RATE OF UNEMPLOYMENT INCREASE IN SOUTH CYPRUS IS ON THE FIRST RANK IN EU
Alithia and the other newspapers published that according to the information given by the EU Institute of Statistics (Eurostat), the Greek Cypriot rate of increase in unemployment in South Cyprus reached the first rank in the EU countries.
According to the news, the rate of unemployment was 15,8% (71 thousand persons) in April but it reached 16,3% (73 thousand persons) in May.
