Tribute to George Roper
By Margaret Sheard
We have received information from Lee Hickens who has just returned from a trip to the UK with his wife Jan. They enjoyed their time there catching up with people but I should imagine they were both relieved to get away from the awful weather which is hitting the UK at the moment.
Lee has been thinking for a while that he would like to arrange a tribute to George Roper on the west side of the island as most of the events to do with George tend to be centred on Esentepe. Lee and Jan knew George and as well as liking him very much they have great admiration for what he and his wife Lesley and the rest of the team achieved in the years before George sadly lost his battle against cancer.
So, Lee has organised a tribute to the late George Roper “The Show Must Go On” at the Haci Ali Hotel in Lapta at 7pm on 18th April when it is hoped to raise a few lira for Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips) in George’s memory.
The Gipsy Brothers are lined up to perform during the evening and also a possible surprise act. There will also be a Quick Quiz for 5TL per person and a few popular numbers will be performed by Lee. At around 10pm there will be a Charity Auction and at around 10.30pm there will also be a raffle with some nice prizes, many of them valued at over 250TL. All of this and it is free entry as well! Donations are welcome however.
The Haci Ali Hotel is a beautiful venue and they offer food and drinks at very reasonable prices. It is hoped to hold the event outside on the lower sea terrace but this will be weather permitting and hopefully by 18th April we will be seeing some much calmer weather than of late and will be able to enjoy the event outdoors on a nice warm evening.
Lee is asking for people to now come out of hibernation and enjoy an evening of entertainment while at the same time helping Tulips to raise much needed funds. After the entertainment, the auction and the raffle the party will begin and you will be able to dance ’til dawn if you have the stamina.
