PM Ustel criticises the Greek Cypriot–France defence deal, warning it raises tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and risks undermining regional stability as the TRNC continues to call for balanced, cooperative security arrangements.

Üstel Slams Greek Cypriot–France Defence Pact

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has criticised the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) signed between the Greek Cypriot Administration and France described it as a misguided step that disregards the realities on the island, the principles of international law, and the delicate balance in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In a statement, Üstel stated that France’s efforts to expand its military presence in the region, despite having no direct historical, geographical, or political ties to Cyprus, could undermine regional stability.

He noted that the agreement reflects a unilateral approach that overlooks the existence and rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, warning that policies aimed at increasing military activity on the island risk further escalating tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Reaffirming the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and Türkiye, Üstel stressed that lasting peace and stability can only be achieved through dialogue, cooperation, and respect for the realities on the island.
