Safety Warning After Candle‑Related House Fire in March | UK Shout
Staying safe from fire at home means taking extra care with cooking, electrical items and, importantly, naked flames. A recent incident in March has highlighted just how quickly things can go wrong when a candle is left unattended.
Safety Warning After Candle‑Related House Fire in March
Firefighters were called to a house fire in March after a bedroom became fully engulfed in flames. Crews from March, Wisbech, and Chatteris worked quickly to contain the blaze and prevent it spreading further through the property.
Four people were inside the home at the time, but all had safely evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Station Commander Clive Allen said:
“The fire is believed to have been caused by a curtain blowing onto a lit candle. We would like to remind people to always remain vigilant when lighting candles. Never leave them unattended and keep them in a draught‑free area away from curtains, furniture, and other flammable surfaces. Alternatively, LED candles are a much safer option.”
He added:
“Thankfully the occupants had working smoke alarms on each floor, which is exactly what we advise. Smoke alarms give you vital early warning of a fire. We recommend testing all alarms once a month to ensure they are working properly. If you need a reminder, you can sign up for our monthly email alert.”
Most of the firefighters attending this incident were on‑call firefighters—local people who respond to emergencies around their everyday jobs and commitments. When their pager sounds, they drop everything to help protect their community.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is actively recruiting more on‑call firefighters across the county. To be eligible, you need to live or work within five minutes of your local fire station and have a good general level of fitness. If you’re interested in supporting your community, visit the Careers section on their website.
