Nicosia International Airport History Part 5
‘The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.’ Theodore Roosevelt.
Part 5 of the Nicosia International Airport series- ‘An airport too far…’ The focus is on the story of what happened to the Cyprus Airways fleet during and after the 1974 Cyprus Crisis.
There is a specific focus on the abandoned Hawker Siddeley Trident 5B DAB and the building it sits in front of, the Cyprus Airways maintenance hangar, also referred to as the Bellman Hangar.
Please find out about Norman Stuart Bellman, who clashed with authorities in the British military to see his hangar design built and tested during conflicts during and after the British Empire. His legacy still continues in this part of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Video Update: All aircraft were eventually allowed to leave Nicosia at some point in 1977; this included the light aircraft mentioned. These aircraft were relocated to Larnaca airport, which opened in 1975. Most of the light aircraft continued to fly on for the Cyprus Aero Club and then for other operators. Some of the planes were transferred over to Paphos airport at a later date and were operated by Griffon Aviation. Please also watch Parts 1-4, videos focusing on stories linked to the airport and the characters involved.
